San Francisco Summer League Pro
Kezar Pavilion is home to the San Francisco Summer League Pro-Am. The San Francisco Pro-Am Summer League Pro-Am is for former and current male and female professional and/or college basketball players. High school players are also welcome to participate in the league. Men and women do not play against each other and are in separate leagues. The San Francisco Summer League Pro-Am originally started in 1979 and has continued each summer since then. The league is supported by the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Department summer programming. The idea behind the summer Pro-Am league is that it adds to the quality of life around the Bay Area and provide locals with an opportunity to see high level competition at no cost. At no cost, the league has become a place for those who cannot afford to attend local college or professional basketball games.
There are no league tryouts for the San Francisco Pro-Am. There is an open-roster policy all season long if the head coach wants to add players. Coaches for each team hand select players for their teams. The season begins in June and ends in August. Games are played Monday-Thursday and are all played at 8:00PM. NBA players in the Pro-Am have included Steph Curry, Aaron Gordon, Jason Kidd, and Jason Richardson. WNBA players to play in the women’s league have included Devanei Hampton, Christy Hedgpeth, and Jennifer Azzi. Azzi was the head coach of the women’s basketball team at the University of San Francisco from 2010 to 2016.

The Most Difficult Position I Will Ever Have
After getting the faculty on board, Williams had a whole staff to assemble and athletic scholarships to dole out.
One early hire was the womens basketball coach, Lindsey Yamasaki, then in her late 20s. She had played briefly in the WNBA and overseas before coming back to the states. When she got to San Francisco, she had to start more or less from scratch. I remember the athletic department saying, ‘OK, well, who’s going to be your assistant coach?’ Yamasaki says. And I was like, ‘Of what?’
Yamasaki spent the summer of 2008 recruiting an entire basketball team. The students she managed to woo were a hodgepodge, including two college volleyball players, one in her mid-20s. Two months after the start of the school year, the womens team played in its first game. It was a disaster.
The inaugural mens basketball season wasnt any better. The first time they played a Division I opponent in November of 2008, they lost 74-23. Not even the schools website could make it sound good. The Urban Knights fought hard but were unable to find the basket, read the announcement posted online.
Meghan Bushnell, who was initially Williams assistant, remembers a clear-eyed and confident Williams in those early years, someone who never wavered in his belief that they could build a competitive athletics program.
Rob Garcia, a basketball operations assistant at the time, remembers it differently.
It certainly had a scrappy vibe.
The Road To Ncaa Division Ii
The program was officially established in 2006 under former Director of Athletics and Super Bowl champion Jamie Williams. The Urban Knights made their competitive debut on August 29, 2008, and received full NCAA Division II membership on July 12, 2012. Competing specifically within NCAA Division II and the Pacific West Conference, the Urban Knights are made up of 14 collegiate sports teams. The Knights have quickly made a name for themselves with numerous conference and national accomplishments including 10+ NCAA individual championships. We are the first athletics program to win two NCAA National Championships in its first year of postseason eligibility. We have made over 40 postseason appearances in mens and womens cross country, womens basketball, mens indoor and outdoor track and field, mens and womens golf, softball, and womens tennis. Go Urban Knights!

What Curriculum Aspects Does The Baseball Academy Cover
The program will include various levels of the Fitness & Performance program, as well as be paired with Phys. Ed. classes throughout the school year. A result, not only will Baseball Academy students be able to work on the various benefits of the program in each semester, they will also earn eight credits toward their Alberta High School Diploma: 5 credits of Phys. Ed. 10/20/30 and 3 credits of Fitness & Performance modules including:
Fitness Performance 1: REC 1040 , REC 2040 , and REC 2010 .
Fitness Performance 2: REC 1050 , REC 2045 , and REC 3015 .
Fitness Performance 3: Will be developed in a similar model.
Where Is The Baseball Academy Program Held
Each day throughout the semester, students will begin the class, either in a classroom, or in the fitness area to study and complete module work. After about 40 minutes of class time, students will move to the gymnasium or outside for Phys. Ed. activities.
Baseball Academy students will work outside the Fitness & Performance program with baseball instructor, Kyle Swannack, once or twice each week, depending on the schedule, working on baseball specific training and skills using school facilities and fields, or off-campus using community facilities.
Students will be working directly with Kyle Swannack approximately 56 times during the school year, and traveling to community facilities to train approximately 20 times during the school year, especially during periods of inclement weather.

What Community Partners Are Involved In This Program
Alberta Sport Development Centre provides services to athletes and coaches throughout Alberta in order to allow athletes to train at a high level without the need to move to larger centres.
Monsignor McCoy’s Baseball Academy will be enhanced by a partnership with ADC. Their personnel will be working with the students in this program at various pointsduring the semester. One of their strength and conditioning coaches will assess each student and give them individualized programs at the beginning of the semester, visit with them during the semester, and reassess them near the end of the program.
This will allow students in the program to have a personalized training program based on preset fitness levels and goals. The sports nutritionist will speak with the students about the importance of proper eating and nutrition while they train and throughout their lives.
We Dont Need You Here
Williams took the job in part because of his deep respect for Stephens, who he tells SFGATE gets a bad rap in some circles but is awesome.
He also knew he could turn her dream into something special. In fact, he didnt just predict the programs success he may have actually manifested it. One of the best things with my own personal journey is being able to put a vision out there that’s audacious enough that people would aspire to it, he says.
But first, he had enormous institutional hurdles to overcome. Just after he started, he says, the chair of the graphic design department poked her finger in his chest. I don’t want any of your athletes in my department, because they won’t be able to handle it, he remembers her telling him. We don’t need you here.
Williams also met with a larger group of faculty members, attempting to convince them that Stephens investment in athletics wasnt going to be a waste of money. His method of persuasion was, as he explains, invoking Newtons first law of motion, a bold choice for a group of liberal arts-minded folks.
You don’t have athletics, you want to maintain the status quo, you want to maintain inertia, he told the faculty members. But when objects are in motion, they want to remain in motion. If we get this thing going, if you’re behind what I’m doing, it will do well and continue to do well. I’m going to do my part and I need you to be there with me and give me a chance to create a proof of concept.

I Want To Beat Somebody
Academy of Art University guard Victor Ruiz de Carranza dunks the ball during the PacWest Men’s Basketball Championships, in 2020.
When Stephens first reached out to Williams, he says he was skeptical about her audacious idea: an art school with no sports teams building an athletics program that could compete with the best teams in the region. But the idea was interesting enough that he agreed to meet her at an Italian joint in North Beach.
I want to be like Stanford or Cal athletics, he remembers her telling him over dinner. I want to beat somebody.
The two made an odd couple: Stephens, who favors big brooches and skirt-suits with linebacker-esque shoulder pads, was riding high, having sent profits at the school soaring with aggressive real estate deals and, shall we say, generous offers to let anyone enroll. It’s long had a dismal graduation rate, one that hovers around 45%, according to the latest data a discrepancy that can charitably be described as a red flag.
Williams, standing a burly 6-foot-4 with an affable grin, had been out of the NFL since 1993 and was now unsuccessfully working on an independent film venture. So when Stephens asked for his advice, he gave it to her.
He started with logistics. Did the school have facilities? No, she said. Did it have any type of affiliation with an NCAA conference? No. Were there any coaches lined up? Not one.
Those were just the obvious sticking points. Williams saw some more subtle challenges, too.
