Derek Jeter Rookie Cards Are Going Up In Value | Sports Cards Investing

Of course, while that card of the Captains is the priciest, it isnt the only one with a lot of value. There are several other valuable Derek Jeter baseball cards available to collectors and investors, including:

  • 1992 Little Sun High School Prospects Auto
  • 1993 Upper Deck #449 Gold Hologram
  • 1992 Front Row Gold #55

Its no surprise why Jeter cards are so valuable. He was immensely popular during his career and remains popular even in retirement. After Jeters recent Hall of Fame induction, it seems as if the value of this card wont drop too much anytime soon even if it isnt the most expensive card ever.

Derek Jeter 1993 Score #489

The most affordable of Jeters major rookie cards is actually one with one of the lower PSA populations. That would be the 1993 Score Derek Jeter. Even in PSA 10, the card sells for a reasonable $100-150. Why?

Score was certainly a value brand in 1993, but I think at least some of the low cost is that the card is a bitshall we say less than attractive. The fact that 34% of all graded copies are 10s cant help any, either.

Best Derek Jeter Rookie Cards To Buy Now

The fact that Derek Jeter has managed to do both in less than five years since retiring is a testament to his talent, intelligence, and permanent status as an aspirational figure for other athletes. These factors will ensure that Derek Jeters rookie cards remain popular in the long-term public consciousness.

He is by far and away considered one of the most popular players ever to wear the Yankees Pin Stripes, if not the most popular of all time .

The Captain, Mr. November, Captain Clutch whatever you want to call Derek Jeter, hes one of the most influential athletes of his generation and one of the best baseball players of all time.

Fleer Excel Derek Jeter #210 Rc

Jeter had many different minor league cards issued in 1992, but the 1992 Fleer Excel Jeter is my favorite.

Featuring Jeter while a member of the Greensboro Hornets, the card is sharp, has a gold nameplate and is a great pose of Jeter.

In addition, the cards were not produced to the same levels as the major league issues from 1993. PSA has graded roughly 1600 copies, with less than 250 PSA 10’s awarded. A PSA 10 Jeter Fleer Excel minor league rookie card sells for between $300 to $400.

This one wins my choice as the best overall value of all Derek Jeter Rookie cards.

Topps Gold Derek Jeter #98

1993 TOPPS STADIUM CLUB MURPHY DEREK JETER ROOKIE CARD #117 HOF RC MINT ...

Believe it or not, there was a time when the hobby didnt have parallels. By the time the New Jersey-born shortstop turned pro, they were starting to show up but in small numbers. The 1993 Topps Gold Derek Jeter represents one of the hobbys earliest pack-inserted parallels. A followup to 1992s debut, Topps ditched the Gold Winners step and went right to Gold.

The different between this and the main version is small enough that its possible some may have one sitting in a box without knowing. For starters, the Topps logo on the front is now in gold foil and has the Topps Gold name. Jeters name is also in the colored foil. These were available in a variety of ways: one per wax pack, three per rack pack, five per jumbo pack and ten per factory set. Needless to say, its not rare overall. But with that being a common theme with virtually every early Derek Jeter card, it does command significant attention.

The other Jeter card from the 1992 Little Sun set shows Jeter in his Kalamazoo high school uniform ready at short.

The pink and green multi-color lettering along the bottom was a sign of the times.

Not as valuable as the autographed version, this card can still command top dollar.

Upper Deck Minor League Derek Jeter Rc #5

A great looking card from another major card producer, the Jeter Upper Deck Minor league card is one of the highlights from Jeter’s 1992 pre-rookie cards. However, Upper Deck hit the printing presses pretty hard on this set, but not nearly the same level as the 1992 Upper Deck base set.

There are about 3,800 PSA graded copies of Jeter’s Upper Deck Minor League pre-rookie card, with about 1,500 PSA 10 copies. Those white borders make it a bit easier to get a high grade from the grading companies.

Collectors can often find PSA 10 graded copies for around $100. This is quite reflective of the major production run of the set, likely in the hundreds of thousands.

Topps Derek Jeter Rookie Card #98

Tradition follows any big-name Rookie Card in flagship Topps. Thats a major drawing point here, elevating the 1993 Topps Derek Jeter above his other base-level RCs. Found in Series 1 packs, its part of the distinct Draft Pick subset making it instantly recognizable.

Even among early Jeter cards, this isnt a hard card to find. It finds much of its popularity thanks to the continuity Topps Baseball brings.

Derek Jeter Rookie Card Details

After being drafted by the Yankees in 1992, Jeter appeared in several 1993 MLB sets put out by Topps, Upper Deck and Score. All told, there are eight different Derek Jeter Rookie Cards to track down.

All carry value now, but thats what happens when youre a Yankee legend and winner of five World Series. The range in values, though, is significant. Most are still affordable if youre looking at raw copies. Things jump significantly when you get into the upper-tier of professionally graded cards.

The outlier is the 1993 SP Derek Jeter. One of the most significant cards of the 1990s, its one that has seen big gains, particularly in the years since his retirement. And it was already popular and pricey before that. This is the clear favorite Derek Jeter Rookie Card.

Leaf Signature Series Autographs Derek Jeter

One of the best autograph sets in the hobby, 1996 Leaf Signature Series gives collectors one of the cleanest options for early Derek Jeter autographs. The card comes with a sharp on-card signature and large foil logo.

Released in two series, there are Derek Jeter cards in both releases. The first series has three different versions, including Bronze , Silver and Gold . Meanwhile, the Extended Series Derek Jeter autograph features a different design and a print run of 1,000 copies. Finally, Jeter was included in the Extended Series Century Marks parallel, which was limited to just 100 cards. In this instance, Jeter was a redemption.

Jeter has a total of four 1993 Topps rookie cards.

A base card from the 1993 Topps set, two special Inaugural Florida Marlins and Colorado Rockies variations , and a Topps Gold card.

A 1993 Topps Colorado Rockies Inaugural Variation Derek Jeter Rookie Card

A 1993 Topps Florida Marlins Inaugural Variation Derek Jeter Rookie Card

Of the four Topps Jeter rookies, I like the Topps Gold insert card, which was produced in much more limited quantities than Jeter’s Topps rookie.

Topps Gold cards parallel the base set and feature a gold nameplate and a gold Topps logo. The gold inserts were issued one per wax pack, three per rack pack, five per jumbo pack, and ten per factory set.

There are less than 9,000 PSA graded Topps Gold Jeter rookies, less than half the graded total of Jeter’s SP Rookie card.

Those I would avoid due to mass overproduction.

One could also make a strong case for either of the Colorado Rockies or Marlins Jeter variations, which were produced in much more limited quantities.

Today, a PSA 10 Topps Gold Jeter is priced mostly on par with one of the other two PSA 10 variations.

I should also quickly mention the 1993 Topps ‘Micro’ Jeter issue, which is a fraction of the size of the regular Topps card. The set was produced in more limited quantities, and there are only 40 PSA 10 graded copies.

Derek Jeter Rookie Card Upper Deck Gold Hologram #449

Upper Deck also had a Gold offering in 1993, but with a twist. In every case of 1993 Upper Deck complete sets, one of the 15 sets had gold holograms on the back. The set was completely the same on the outside, so the only way to tell you got a gold hologram set was to open it.

Exactly how many gold hologram sets isnt known, but considering its only 1/15 sets, and only complete sets, the number must be fairly small.

PSA has only graded 325 1993 Upper Deck Gold Hologram cards, with 46 of these cards PSA 10s. Recent PSA sales have been in the $7,000-10,000 range.

Pinnacle Derek Jeter Rookie Card #457

Found in 1993 Pinnacle Series 2 packs, this is an attractive Derek Jeter Rookie Card. The black and white design elements are a nice compliment to Jeter in his pinstripes. This marked the second year for the Pinnacle line, Scores answer to high-end baseball cards. And it played along the lines of other companies including slick glossy card stock and a hint of gold foil with the Pinnacle logo on the front.

While the black borders add to the visual appeal, they sometimes do the card no favors as even minor dings and imperfections are that much more apparent.

As far as value goes, even though its high-end Score, its not too expensive as far as key Derek Jeter cards go. But thats still relative.

Score Derek Jeter Rc #489

TOP 25 Derek Jeter Rookie Card List – Investing in Jeter RC’S

When Score first burst onto the scene, it was popular simply because the hobby was growing fast and there weren’t a lot of options. By the time 1993 rolled around, collectors had many choices and the base brand was losing its way. Simply put, the 1993 Score Derek Jeter doesn’t have nearly the same appeal as his other rookies. It starts with the low-end quality but is hurt further by the overly busy design that includes Jeter’s name written as though he were a part of The Dukes of Hazzard opening credits. Not surprisingly, this is often the cheapest Derek Jeter rookie card on the market.

A sign of the times of how cards were being massively printed from all angles during the early 1990’s, here we actually have a card with Jeter from his high school days in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

His non-autographed version is also on this list but it’s his autographed version that can go for thousands of dollars in PSA 10 condition.

Only 250 autographed versions were printed so they’re extremely rare, especially in PSA 10 condition.

At the time, Pinnacle was one of the hobby’s premium brands and the 1993 release is noticeably slicker than many of the other Derek Jeter rookie cards. The simple design and portrait also make it one of his most attractive cards. Although it is by no means rare, the black borders are a little tougher for grading. As a result, top-grade versions command a bit of a premium.

Which Jeter Rookie Card Is For You

What is the best Derek Jeter rookie card? Thats far too subjective a question. But theres likely a perfect Jeter rookie card for you.

If youre a high roller and big time Jeter fan, the 1993 Upper Deck Gold Holo or a high grade 1993 SP are the clear choices. But Ill go out on a limb and guess that not everyone reading this article falls into those two categories, and besides, its boring when the answer to the question about what the best rookie card is answered simply with the most expensive one.

If youre looking for an entry-level Jeter, the 1993 Score is compelling based on its lower purchase price. The fact that the total PSA population for this card isnt massive helps, although the high percentage of 10s isnt ideal. Also, I personally dont love the design of the card. If it doesnt bother you, or you like it, its a very affordable option.

In between the two extremes, Id say two mid-level options stand out as compelling. The first is the 1993 Select. The card has the lowest total PSA population and PSA 10 population of the cards on our list, and it sells for prices at the lower end of the spectrum.

The other is the 1993 Bowman. Its got a bit higher PSA population than the Select card, but its an attractive card that sells strongly for a tick above what the Select card demands.

In this article we focused on PSA 10 prices. If youre happy with a PSA 9 , the prices involved are significantly lower.
