Phillies vs. Astros World Series Game 2 Highlights (10/29/22) | MLB Highlights
  • Publish date: Oct 28, 2022 11:00 AM EDT

The Houston Astros are back in familiar water. The American League champions are set for their fourth World Series in six years, their third against a National League East club.

Facing the Philadelphia Phillies in a three-game set to end the regular season, the Astros embark on a best-of-seven series starting Friday at home. The roof will be closed, which would be an advantage to the New York Yankees a joke many have made since the news was made.

And taking the mound for Houston in Game 1 is none other than Justin Verlander. The future Hall of Fame inductee hasn’t appeared in the Fall Classic since 2019, a series he’d rather forget.

Verlander has pitched in four World Series, posting a 5.68 ERA in 38 innings across seven starts. Of all three postseason series he’s pitched in, he’s performed his worst in the spot he’ll be in Saturday night.

But in his final start of the year on Oct. 4, Verlander matched up with the Phillies. In a glorified spring training game, the righty threw five no-hit innings allowing just one walk to his 10 strikeouts.

Philadelphia is hot though, and the club is scheduled to start Aaron Nola former LSU teammate, and roommate, of Alex Bregman. Entering the postseason as the last Wild Card team, the Phillies have flirted with history, reaching the World Series on momentum and team structure.

Astros’ Kyle Tucker: Two Homers In Game 1

Tucker went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, a solo home run and a walk during Friday’s 6-5 loss to the Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series.

Tucker had a perfect start to Game 1 with two homers in his first two at bats, but the Astros were ultimately unable to hold a five-run lead. The 25-year old accounted for four of the five runs on the night for Houston, achieving a multi-homer game for the first time since May 17 against the Red Sox. Tucker came into the World Series batting just .214 with one RBI across 28 at-bats in the postseason. He is slated to face Zack Wheeler in Game 2, a pitcher he has not faced in his career.

Phillies Game 3 Starter

4:25 p.m.: After Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler start the first two games, the natural Game 3 starter for the Phillies would be Ranger Suarez, but he entered in the seventh inning of Game 1, striking out Yordan Alvarez to end that frame, then facing Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker in the eighth before being removed after throwing 11 pitches. Before Saturdays game, Phillies manager Rob Thomson was coy about who his Game 3 starter would be, saying everyone, including Suarez, is available to pitch in Game 2. We wont announce until after this game, Thomson said. I want to talk to those guys and circle back with the pitching coaches one more time. Matt Young

Astros’ Chance Fizzles Out

8:14 p.m.: After drawing a leadoff walk in the Astros third, Yordan Alvarez was off and running on a 3-and-2 pitch to Alex Bregman, ostensibly to stay out of a double play. But on Bregman’s hard grounder to short, Edmundo Sosa was still able to start a twin killing with a quick throw to second baseman Jean Segura. Kyle Tucker then flied to center to keep the game 3-0 through three. Steve Schaeffer

Astros’ Justin Verlander: Allows Five Runs In Game 1

Verlander pitched five innings and did not factor into the decision Friday night in Game 1 of the World Series, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five in a 6-5 loss to the Phillies.

Verlander was given a five-run advantage by the Houston offense, but he surrendered six hits and five runs in his last two innings and was unable to keep the lead. After three perfect innings to begin the game, the 39-year-old seemed on his way to another gem before the Phillies broke through and made consistent hard contact. Coming into the World Series with a 10-1 record and 1.64 ERA at home during the 2022 regular season, Verlander was expected to give the Astros a great chance at taking an early lead in the series. Instead, he has now given up five runs or more in two of his three playoff starts, a slightly alarming trend for the future Hall of Famer.

Astros’ Jose Altuve: Swipes Bag In Loss

Altuve went 1-for-5 with a stolen base during Friday night’s 6-5 loss to the Phillies in Game 1 of the World Series.

Altuve had a rough time at the plate Friday night, but he was able to single with two outs in the ninth inning and steal second base off Seranthony Dominguez, putting the potential winning run in scoring position. This marked Altuve’s first steal of the playoffs after he stole 18 during the regular season, but he’s hitting just .108 across 37 at-bats in the postseason with only one extra-base hit.

The More Phillies Pitchers The Better

7:46 p.m.: Even though there’s a day off between Games 2 and 3, the Astros would do well to pile on Zack Wheeler and get into the Phillies’ bullpen. Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson used five relievers in Game 1, including potential Game 3 starter Ranger Suarez, and was already contemplating a bullpen game in Game 4. There could be long-term benefits to chasing Wheeler early tonight. Steve Schaeffer

    Mum’s The Word For Manfred

6 p.m.: Whenever Rob Manfred speaks, the baseball world listens.

MLB’s commissioner appeared to be aware of that before Game 2, when Manfred declined to speak with a group of waiting media members.

Manfred chatted with MLB Players Association executive director Tony Clark, Astros legend Craig Biggio and Astros general manager James Click while the home team finished batting practice on Saturday inside Minute Maid Park.

Manfred was friendly with the media and engaged in a brief conversation. But the commissioner said that he wanted the focus to be on the World Series and players on the field, not him.

It was an interesting decision, considering that Manfred recently made news by discussing MLB relocation possibilities, new stadiums for Oakland and Tampa Bay, and the potential for a permanent free runner on second base in extra innings during an interview with SiriusXM.

A year ago, Manfred made national news with his controversial World Series comments about the Astros and Atlanta Braves, among other topics, inside Minute Maid Park.

A year later, Manfred headed into a nearby tunnel when reporters clearly wanted to engage with MLB’s commissioner.

Would Roger Goodell or Adam Silver have walked away?

    It’s unlikely.

But Manfred was content before Game 2 to leave the focus between the lines.

Maybe MLB’s commissioner will answer questions in a real press conference setting before the 2022 Fall Classic is complete. Brian T. Smith

    Phillies Vs Astros Analysis

While many are saying that this Phillies team got hot at the right time and that momentum has carried them all the way here, thats not exactly the case. Yes, their bats are hot, but the truth is they were excellent all year long.

The Phillies finished the regular season top 10 in barrel rate, hard-hit rate and average exit velocity. That translated to a top-three finish in xBA and ranking sixth in both xSLG and xWOBACON . While weve seen all that positive regression come to light this October, Verlander may knock them back down to Earth tonight.

Verlander proved this season that he is one of the best pitchers of this generation, and he matches up very well with this Phillies lineup. At this point in his career, Verlander is essentially a fastball-slider guy while flipping in a curveball to change speeds 20 percent of the time.

The Phillies are a team that has proved they can handle the fastball as guys such as Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, Bryce Harper, Rhys Hoskins and Alec Bohm all punished the fastball this season. However, it was a very different case against sliders.

They only had four guys with an above-average run value against sliders, and of those four, only Harper has an xBA above .230 and a strikeout rate below 34 percent.

If Verlander can establish the glove side of the plate with his fastball, he should have plenty of success, as hell be able to work in to lefties and away from righties with his bread and butter.

    Judge Makes Huge Catch

It didn’t end up mattering, not really, but Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge made arguably his best catch of the season from a statistical perspective early on. Bregman hit a ball to right, right-center with two runners on base and one out. It looked like Bregman was going to have extra bases, yet Judge laid out and made the grab.

Taillon Keeps The Yankees In The Game

Yankees right-hander Jameson Taillon didn’t have a Verlander-like performance by any means. He did keep the game close, however, and that meant he surpassed the modest expectations placed upon him facing the vaunted Astros lineup.

Taillon threw 4 1/3 innings, surrendering one run on four hits and three walks. He didn’t strike out anyone on 67 pitches. Taillon’s line almost looked worse, as manager Aaron Boone removed him in the fifth after he surrendered a double. Reliever Clarke Schmidt, who would eventually yield two home runs, loaded the bases with back-to-back walks before generating a pivotal double-play ball.

Regardless of what would happen with Schmidt in the subsequent inning, the Yankees likely would’ve signed up for Taillon facing 20 batters and exiting with a tied score.

Astros’ Framber Valdez: Stellar Start In Game 2

Valdez pitched 6.1 innings and earned the win during Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Phillies in Game 2 of the World Series, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Valdez gave the Astros a much-needed performance in Game 2, keeping the red-hot Phillies’ lineup off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. The 28-year-old had great control with his curveball Saturday, and he recorded five of his nine K’s via the breaking ball. Valdez has been outstanding in the playoffs — he has allowed only three earned runs in 19 innings during the postseason while amassing 24 strikeouts. The southpaw finished the regular season at 17-6 with a 2.82 ERA, but he looks even better in the playoffs.

Verlander Bounced Back From A Lousy Playoff Outing With A Game 1 Gem Against The Yankees

The Houston Astros took down the New York Yankees, 4-2, in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park. The Astros lead the best-of-seven series 1-0, meaning they’re three games away from punching a ticket to the World Series for the fourth time since 2017.

The Astros fell behind in the second inning, as Harrison Bader delivered his fourth home run in his sixth postseason game this fall, launching a solo shot against Justin Verlander. Houston would tie things up in the bottom half of the inning. Backstop Martín Maldonado launched an opposite-field double that plated Chas McCormick.

The two sides would trade zeroes until the sixth inning. That’s when first baseman Yuli Gurriel hit a home run to left field to put Houston up 2-1. The aforementioned McCormick would hit his own solo home run a couple batters later, building the lead up to 3-1. Another home run, this time from Jeremy Peña in the seventh, made it 4-1.

The Yankees would get a run back in the eighth on an Anthony Rizzo solo shot, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Yankees would threaten further in the eighth, putting the tying run on first with two outs. The score remained the same until the final out, however, sealing the deal for the Astros.
