Such unprecedented speed is changing the game — and the drive to throw ever faster may also be risking the safety of younger players dreaming of the majors.

“Everyone thinks the harder you throw, the earlier you throw , the better chance you have of being a pro,” said Eric Makhni, an orthopedic surgeon at the Henry Ford Health System in Michigan, and the former team physician for the Chicago White Sox.

To throw harder, pitchers from little leaguers to pros have been training with baseballs heavier than the standard 5 ounces. While proponents say heavier balls are safe, doctors like Makhni worry that the extra load may carry too much risk of injury.

Now a recent study with youth players points to a potentially safer alternative: lighter baseballs.

The study, published in the Orthopaedic Journal of Sports Medicine in March, is preliminary and limited. But, “it should start the discussion of whether lighter balls should be implemented instead of overweight balls,” said Brandon Erickson, an orthopedic surgeon at the Rothman Orthopedic Institute in New York, who led the research.

But Erickson recommends against throwing overweight balls at all. “Throwing it like a baseball unnecessarily increases the risk of getting an injury,” he said.

Before the founding of professional baseball in 1871, baseball historians credited amateur pitcher James Creighton around 1860 with throwing a fast ball. At that time, pitchers only tossed the ball underhanded with no speed to encourage hitters to swing so fielders could get them out. Height and weight obviously matter when it comes to pitching velocity. Theres s kid on my sons 11U club team whose father was an offensive lineman at Michigan State. The kids huge, both in height and girth. The father once told me that his kid already weighs 170 pounds, amounting to 80 pounds more than my son.

Its unrealistic to think my average-sized son can throw harder than a kid whos that much bigger, and he doesnt. But the difference is not as much as one might think.

My son has always been skinny on top with strong legs and butt. Realizing he had room to fill out, and the extra weight would add to his pitching velocity, I did the following:

  • Replaced 2 percent milk with whole milk
  • Cooked pasta for him at least twice a week
  • Made sure he didnt skip any meals
  • Got him into smoothies

He gained 10 pounds over the winter, and is now more solid up top. While his height is below average, his weight is above average. Hes also throwing harder.
