The Northeast Texas Community College Eagles played San Jacinto College 9-3 on Tuesday and lost. Both teams will play again on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in a Region 14 tournament. San Jacinto College Apaches

Benny Helms Sr., a native of the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, coached the team. He played softball for the San Jacinto Little League and later joined the Apaches junior college team. Benny, who also played Rezball with his brother Vince Valdez, is one of the oldest Apaches on the team and graduated from San Jacinto High School.

The team is committed to giving back to the community. Off the field, the San Jac Coyotes participate in various community events, including a golf tournament to raise money for the San Jac College Foundation. Head Coach Chris Rateike

Rateike enters his 15th season as the head coach of the Rebels’ baseball program. His first season at the helm found him one game away from making the NJCAA World Series. In his time here, he has sent numerous players on to Division I, Division II, and NAIA Universities and a few trips to the post-season.

Rateike’s previous coaching experience includes stops at schools such as: Northeastern Junior College, Frank Phillips College, Indian Hills Community College, Arkansas Tech University, and the USA Baseball Athletic Development Program. His coaching tenure has seen him recruit and develop 96 players who have signed professional contracts including four AAA players and five Major League Players. In the 2016 Major League draft, four former Rebels were taken in by the Giants, Royals, Braves, and the Red sox. He also has had the honor of coaching four players who went on to play professionally and were given the opportunity to play in the World Baseball Classic.

Rateike’s collegiate playing experience began at Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, Iowa. In his two years with the Falcons, the baseball team won two conference titles, two sub-regional titles, a regional title, and a fifth-place finish in the 1992 NJCAA World Series. After that, Rateike transferred to Arkansas Tech University where he finished his college career. He earned his way into the record books with records such as: appearances in a season , career appearances , single-season ERA , and career ERA .

The Southwest Junior College Conference is a sports conference in Texas. Its teams have won 55 national championships. Texas won four NCAA College World Series , and the mens and womens teams have won the NCAA Championship twice. Texas won the NCAA Womens Basketball Championship in 1986 and 1993, while Houston and Texas Tech won the mens title in the same year.

The SWJCC is a Division I baseball conference that includes many Community and Tech Colleges in the state. The panel holds a tournament that doubles as a region tournament. The champion of the SWAC Conference Tournament advances to the Southern District Championships. The Southwest Junior College Conference is also a member of the NJCAA.
