Where Plans For A Baseball Stadium In Downtown Kansas City Stand
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. At spring training in Surprise, Arizona, John Sherman, the chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals Major League Baseball franchise, said the team continues to study the possibility of building a new ballpark.
The Royals have played at Kauffman Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex since 1973, after four years at Municipal Stadium.
Were looking at multiple sites, weve engaged some really good firms to help us look at that in terms of sports, architecture, economic impact studies, and things like that, Sherman said at spring training in March.
Those statements align with an announcement Sherman made in September 2021 saying he was studying the long-term future of the Royals stadium. In both September and March, Sherman refused to put a timeline on when any decision could be made.
The Royals are contractually obligated to play at the Truman Sports Complex through the end of the 2030 season.
One revelation Sherman made at spring training was he envisions any potential new stadium to be paid for with a combination of team money and taxpayer dollars in a public-private partnership.
Well be big investors, Sherman said of the Royals organization. We got a really good team working on it and excited to see how that comes out.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas has previously used Twitter to compare a downtown baseball stadium to a Maserati. Sure, itd be great to have one, but there are other items in the budget to prioritize before buying a luxury car.
Kauffman Stadium Seating Map
The Royals have always considered fan safety as an important part of our effort to create a great experience at Kauffman Stadium. The Kansas City Royals would like to take this opportunity to provide some information concerning the general location of netting at Kauffman Stadium.
The above pictures show the general location where additional netting has been installed. The height and coverage of netting or screening varies. Please understand that it is not possible for a map like this to show the precise location of the netting. In addition, even if netting exists in a particular location, it is still possible for balls, bats and other objects leaving the field of play to strike fans. No seat in Kauffman Stadium is free from the risk of injury inherent in attending a live baseball game.

*Classic parks Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, and Dodger Stadium are not ranked or rated for reasons previously outlined in those reviews. Ratings are up to date, but this Kauffman Stadium review needs further updating for format and content.
IMPORTANT NOTE: While the content, review, ratings, and ranking will mostly stay the same, some information will be updated based on my 2018 trip to Kauffman Stadium. As you can see by the layout, this 2009 review was particularly outdated. Ratings HAVE now been updated.
Regarding the modern ballparks of the 1960s-70s, I used to claim that in the somewhat distant future, there would be three kinds of ballparks remaining.
The wide majority of the ballparks built during the turn of the century wave 1991-2015 will probably exist longer than their predecessors and are all reasonably similar in retro style and revenue generating substance. Even those that deviate from the retro formula are built along the same mentality. Then we will have Wrigley and Fenway representing the early 1900s.
Then we have Kauffman Stadium , the best from the 60s and 70s. Representing an era where utility was king, K.C. built a beautiful baseball-only stadium with modernist elements. Does that mean in 2040, the K will be the Wrigley/Fenway of today, at least in the sense that it epitomizes a bygone era?
And unfortunately, the K did just that.

On March 10, 2022, the MLB and MLBPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement, thus ending the lockout. Opening Day was played on April 7. Although MLB previously announced that several series would be cancelled due to the lockout, the agreement provides for a 162-game season, with originally canceled games to be made up via doubleheaders.
On September 13, 2022, with their loss to the Minnesota Twins, the Kansas City Royals were officially eliminated from playoff contention for the sixth consecutive season.

Longest Nfl Game Played
The Chiefs’ final game at Municipal Stadium was played on Christmas Day 1971 and was historic. Despite a brilliant game by the Chiefs’ Ed Podolak, who had 350 total yards from scrimmage, an NFL playoff record that still stands, the Chiefs were beaten by the Dolphins 2724, when Garo Yepremian kicked a walk-off field goal with 7:20 left in double overtime. The double-overtime playoff contest lasted 82 minutes and 40 seconds and remains the longest game in NFL history, as well the only post-season football game played at Municipal Stadium.
New Royals Downtown Ballpark Could Happen Early
A downtown K.C. ballpark for the Royals “could be opening sooner” than some might have imagined based on Owner John Sherman’s public comments and accounts of “behind-the-scenes conversations that civic and government sources have had with the team,” according to a front-page piece by Hendricks, Hardy & Adler of the K.C. STAR. Two potential sites have “dominated their discussions with local officials.” Sources said that the one the Royals “seem to prefer” is “within the freeway loop” in an area known as the East Village. The one that some politicians are “encouraging the team to consider” is “beyond that ring of highways but still close to the downtown skyline.” While the clubs lease of Kauffman Stadium does not “run out” until the end of the ’30 season, the Royals are considering the possibility of a move” in time for Opening Day 26. That could mean a ballot issue to “extend the current Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums sales tax” later this year or early in 23. The Royals said that they have “not proposed any ballot measures this year, but confirmed the team could leave Kauffman early.” There currently is discussion of possibly asking Jackson County voters at November’s general election to “extend the current sales tax for however long it would take to pay the countys share of helping the Chiefs and Royals build new facilities” .

Where Are The Shaded Seats At Kauffman Stadium
As a general rule, the seats in the shade at Kauffman Stadium are located:
- Behind home plate and on the 3rd base side of the park
- Farther back in a section under an overhang
- In the 400-level section behind home plate under the stadium roof
Kauffman Stadium is similar to Wrigley in that there is limited seating in the outfield, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. There is ample seating space everywhere else, making it possible to find shade if you know where to look. Regardless of the position of the sun, any seat in the somewhat limited 300-level part of the stadium will be covered and have adequate protection from the sun. Kauffman also features an overhang between sections 409 and 431 in the upper level, helping to protect those seated in these areas.
The Royals start a majority of their night games at 7:15 p.m. When the Royals play day games at home, they typically start at 1:15 p.m. Occasionally, games will start an hour before or an hour after these times. However, most of Kansas Citys home games will have either a 7:15 or 1:15 start time.
From Stadium To Cloud
Two events set the Royals down this new digital path. First was the $250 million renovation of 47-year old Kauffman Stadium, completed in 2009, which included a high-definition scoreboard, an outfield concourse fan experience, a first of its kind IPTV platform and more throughout the highly connected venue. Himstedt, an Accenture veteran who had recently led digital strategy for an ad agency, joined later that year. A lifelong soccer player, passionate baseball fan and overall sports enthusiast, Himstedt was eager to take on a similar challenge in pro sports. I wasnt a part of the renovation process, but I had the good fortune to help the organization embrace the use and benefits of all of the fun new toys after renovation ended, he says.
There was also an internal challenge presented by the renovation. The Royals IT processes and technologies and the staff mindset that went along with them were still old-school. Like most MLB teams at the time, the Royals ran on the status quoon-premise hardware, software, and storage. We put phones and computers on desks and connected people, Himstedt says. IT wasnt yet a strategic role in the organization.
Migrating IT services from on-premise to the cloud became the first order of business, starting with a jump to cloud-based email in 2012. Then came additional layers, such as integrating Microsoft Office 365 across the organization.

Kauffman Stadium Orientation To The Sun
Kauffman Stadium is built so that batters face to the northeast, which is where the sun rises every morning. In the evenings, the sun sets beyond the 3rd base side of the stadium. Of course, in between, there is no shortage of sunshine drenching the playing field and large sections of the stands.
The graphic below shows the approximate location of the sun throughout the day on July 1st .

History Of Kauffman Stadium

Opened as Royals Stadium on April 10, 1973, Kauffman is recognized throughout baseball as one of the game’s most beautiful ballparks. Since then, many exciting games have been contested, including the 1973 and 2012 All-Star Games, three no-hitters, playoff games in 1976, ’77, ’78, ’80, ’81, ’84, ’85, 2014 and ’15 with 13 World Series tilts in 1980, 1985, 2014 and 2015. The facility was officially renamed in honor of Ewing M. Kauffman in a ceremony at the stadium on July 2, 1993.
Before the 2004 season, the outfield fences in the gaps and in straight-away center field were moved back 10 feet to their original dimensions of 387 and 410, respectively, making Kauffman Stadium one of the most spacious parks in Major League Baseball. In addition, the warning track was changed to a natural surface, and the height of the fence is now at eight feet. The fences were moved in 10 feet from bullpen to bullpen prior to the 1995 season and lowered from 12 feet to nine feet. Also at that time, a grass playing field replaced the artificial surface at Kauffman Stadium.
Kauffman Stadium’s unique features include a 322-foot wide water spectacular. The water spectacular opened as the largest privately funded fountain in the world. In keeping with the architecture of the stadium, the existing water spectacular featuring cascading water now extends near the left field corner.
Prior to the 1999 campaign, additional field level seating, known as “Crown Seats” and four dugout suites were added.

Major League Baseball All Star Game
On July 11, 1960, Municipal Stadium hosted the best major league players in front of 30,619 fans. During the years when two major league All-Star Games were scheduled each year instead of one, Municipal Stadium hosted the first of the two 1960 games, with the National League winning the contest 53. Team rosters included over 15 future Hall of Fame members.
Ernie Banks, Del Crandall and Al Kaline hit home runs in the contest.

What Is The Capacity At Kauffman Stadium
The Kansas City Royals Stadium capacity is 37,903 seats, but that can increase with standing room sections. This 37k capacity puts the size of the venue in the same discussion as Fenway Park capacity. The record attendance for a baseball game came in under 42,000 people, and that was in the 80s against the Yankees. When the Royals made it back to the World Series in 2014 and 2015, average crowd attendance for those years grew.
