Low Marks For Mlb On Fox And Espn While Yanks

Regional Major League Baseball on FOX averaged a 1.0 rating and 1.59 million viewers Thursday night, marking the networks second-smallest audience of the season. A Saturday night window earlier this month pulled just 949,000 viewers. Viewership declined 9% from the comparable telecast in 2019, the last time MLB on FOX went head-to-head with Thursday Night Football. FOX fared better with its traditional Saturday window last week, averaging a 1.0 and 1.77 million.

In other MLB action, Giants-Cubs drew a mere 0.35 and 634,000 on ESPNs Sunday Night Baseball last weekend easily the smallest Sunday night audience of the season. The previous low was 961,000 for Giants-Cardinals opposite NBA and NHL Game 7s in May.

In a rarity, the weekly Tuesday night game on TBS averaged more viewers than Sunday Night Baseball. TBS averaged a 0.43 and 677,000 for Yankees-Red Sox Tuesday night, its third-largest audience of the season behind a pair of Mets-Yankees games.

Since the network acquired the rights to postseason baseball coverage, Fox has received criticism from non-baseball fans for not airing first-run original programming during October. For the majority of the time that Fox has aired baseball, the network started the fall season for The Simpsons and other shows in November and the fall runs of a few other series beginning in August or September, before being put on hiatus until after the World Series . In 2005, Fox started its fall programming season in September, put its series in hiatus in October for the Major League Baseball playoffs, and resumed non-baseball programming in November. Both approaches have drawn criticism, indicating that there may not be a perfect way for the network to accommodate both sports and regular entertainment programming.

How To Watch Mlb Games On Opening Day

Nearly all of the games on Opening Day will be broadcast on regional sports networks, meaning that viewers will need to be within their region to view them on cable television.

Across the first two days of Opening Day, however, there will be a few nationally televised games. The first two Mets vs. Nationals games on Thursday and Friday will be on ESPN+ and Apple TV+, respectively. The Reds vs. Braves on Thursday will be on ESPN2. The White Sox vs. Tigers game on Friday will be on ESPN+, and the Astros at Angels on Saturday will also be on Apple TV+.

Each day, there will be an afternoon game on MLB Network, depending on locality. On Thursday, fans not in the Milwaukee or Chicago regions will see the Brewers vs. Cubs on MLB Network. On Friday, the network will broadcast the Red Sox vs. Yankees game for anyone not in the region, or Athletics vs. Phillies for those who are in the Boston or New York regions.
