SALT LAKE CITY, Utah Before the Salt Lake Bees were a Minor League Baseball team, a number of additional ball clubs called Salt Lake City home.
The Bees are a Triple-A Minor League Baseball team located in Utahs capital city.
However, the Bees werent the states first Minor League ball club. In fact, SLC hosted multiple baseball teams prior to the Salt Lake Bees.
The Ballpark Facility Driver Of Development
The 12,5000-seat stadium, completed in 1994, was a signature project of Mayor Deedee Corradini , who with the new stadium was able to lure the Triple-A Portland Beavers to the high desert.
Built primarily with a bond issued by the citys Redevelopment Agency, along with contributions from the county and state, $18.7 million in public money was buttressed by nearly $7 million in private contributions to pay for construction .
The stadium footprint is an RDA area, a mechanism that allowed the stadium project to receive the benefits of being in a Redevelopment Project Area mainly floating a bond but created zero tax increment to be invested in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Development around the ballpark facility, opened in 1994, has been minimal, with the notable exceptions of multi-family housing along West Temple and adjacent to the Trax station. Photos by Luke Garrott.
Expected to be an economic driver, the stadium hasnt paid off in that way, In fact, that is the premise of the 2005 Tribune story by Lya Wodraska and Heather May cited above. They note that little has changed for the neighborhood in ten years of drawing fans to the stadium, despite the nearby Trax station opening in 1999.

Cependant, si vous choisissez le box 1 et que le troisième box termine deuxième, vous ne gagnerez rien. A few issues are at play in Salt Lake City: the current state of Smiths Ballpark in central Salt Lake City, city hopes that ballpark renovations could help revive the neighborhood, the impending end of the teams lease, the potential for Smith Entertainment Group, the Miller Company and Arctos Sports Partners to spearhead a drive to bring MLB to Salt Lake County. Yes, theres a lot here to unpack.
Lets begin with Smiths Ballpark. The ballpark is set in one of the most scenic locales in baseball, and though its a little olderit opened in 1994 as Franklin Quest Fieldit seems to be in pretty fine condition, based on our last visit. One of the challenges for the Bees not been the ballpark, but rather with the surrounding neighborhood, sorely in need of some TLC. The city has been talking about renovations as part of a new lease with a capacity of 14,511, it could use a little downsizing to create a more intimate game experience.
There are a lot of wheels in motion and a lot of local speculation. It will be a fascinating process to see if any MLB talk is actually centered in reality or if theres a lot of wishful thinking from local pundits.

It cant be ignored: the pixie sprinkle in the air of another major league sports franchise coming to Utah. Many sports fans, development watchers, and civic boosters are in a tizzy of speculation about what sport could come and where a stadium might be built.
The owners of the Bees, the Miller family, are likely partners in that effort. And it wouldnt surprise anyone if Major League Baseball were at the top of the local owners group wish list, led by the Utah Jazz majority owner, Ryan Smith.
A week ago the family was in the news after selling a part of their remaining 20% ownership in the Utah Jazz. The familys patriarch Larry H. Miller bought the NBA franchise in 1985, which had moved to Salt Lake City from New Orleans in 1979. The recent sale seems likely to accommodate the new members of the Jazz ownership team, Arctos Sports Partners, a private equity firm specializing in sports and entertainment ventures.
Notably, Gail Miller, the head of the company since her husband Larrys death in 2009, reasserted their commitment to the Bees in a statement marking the sale: In addition to our business enterprises and philanthropic endeavors, we are proud to continue our ownership of the Salt Lake Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels. Utahs capital city became home to the Pioneer Leagues Salt Lake City Trappers baseball team in 1985. The Trappers were previously known as the Calgary Expos before their move to Utah. The Trappers played at Derks Field in Salt Lake City. Derks Fields was located at the same site of present-day Smiths Ballpark.

Prior Professional Baseball In Salt Lake City
After the 1914 Pacific Coast League season, Salt Lake City businessman Bill “Hardpan” Lane purchased the Sacramento Solons and brought the team to Utah as the Salt Lake City Bees. Though a charter member of the PCL, the Solons suffered on the field and at the gate, being exiled at times to Tacoma, Fresno, and San Francisco. On March 31, 1915, their first game was played with 10,000 fans pouring into Majestic Park to cheer the Bees to a 93 win over the Vernon Tigers.
The original Bees never won a PCL pennant, but they did draw attendees well, especially considering the small market size. Other PCL team owners, though, resented the high cost of travel to Salt Lake City. When the Vernon Tigers abandoned Los Angeles after the 1925 season, it was suggested to Lane that he would do well to transfer his team to southern California. So after eleven seasons, the Bees moved to Los Angeles for the 1926 season. At first known as the Hollywood Bees, the team soon became the Hollywood Stars. After ten seasons in Hollywood, the team transferred again, to San Diego, where it played as the San Diego Padres from 1936 to 1968. Salt Lake City was without a baseball team until 1946 when it received a franchise in the Pioneer League.

The current contract between the city and the Bees has the following outlines, according to the Facilities Division:
$15,000/year rent, which includes parking lot to north
Bees keep all game-day revenue
City assumes all capital expenditures, which includes big-ticket items like replacement of roof and turf
Bees responsible for maintenance and operations costs
Bees may make improvements to the facility, but they must be approved by the city and become city property
The income from the current five-year naming-rights agreement with Smiths food stores averages $270,000 a year, which is split 60-40 between the city and the club.
The city says the funds to cover its capital project responsibilities come from the naming-rights funds and one-time appropriations from the city council.

The Salt Lake Bees minor-league baseball club is considering a move out of the city and the timing couldnt be worse for city hall.
At the same time, the city council is currently reviewing and likely to rubber stamp the first neighborhood plan for the area. It centers the ballpark facility in the neighborhoods future, counting on frequent events to enliven a festival street.
Talks at city hall over the Bees expiring lease at the city-owned Smiths Ballpark have been ongoing for months, sources there confirmed to us. On the table is the team leaving for the suburbs.
City leaders have a lot on the line in the negotiations. The Ballpark neighborhood has been receiving recent media attention for safety, security, and homeless concerns issues that are unlikely to see quick resolution In the slowly-gentrifying neighborhood.
What if the Bees were to leave? How would the city compensate for the loss of frequent events?
Another question arises for the Ballpark neighborhood and city planners.
