Mets’ Carlos Carrasco: Ineffective Against Brewers
Carrasco tossed four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four in Tuesday’s win over the Brewers. He did factor into the decision.
Carrasco didn’t have his best stuff Tuesday, surrendering three runs in the second inning on four hits and a walk. He was able to follow up the difficult frame with two scoreless innings before being removed from the contest after the fourth. The poor outing snapped a two-game quality start streak for the right-hander. Since returning from the 15-day injured list Sept. 4, Carrasco has produced a 2.89 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 23 strikeouts over 18.2 frames in four starts.
Mets’ Brandon Nimmo: Dealing With Quad Tightness
Nimmo exited Wednesday’s game against the Brewers due to left quadriceps tightness, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.
Nimmo reached base on a single and stole a base in the top of the first inning Wednesday, but he was replaced defensively during the bottom half of the frame. The severity of the issue isn’t yet clear, but he should tentatively be considered day-to-day ahead of Friday’s series opener in Oakland.
Mets’ Drew Smith: Officially Activated From Il
Smith was activated off the 15-day injured list by the Mets on Tuesday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Smith has been held out of action since the end of July with a lat strain on his right side. During his rehab stint in Triple-A Syracuse, he pitched four scoreless innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters. He figures to serve as a middle-innings option in the Mets’ bullpen as they prepare for what they hope will be a deep run into the postseason.

Braves’ Mike Soroka: Lands On Injured List
Soroka was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday due to elbow soreness, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Soroka spent most of the season recovering from an Achilles injury and was sent to Gwinnett after being reinstated from the injured list at the beginning of September. He posted a 6.23 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 13 innings over three starts following his activation but will now miss the remainder of the season. However, the right-hander isn’t believed to be dealing with any structural damage, so it’s possible that he’s ready for the start of spring training in 2023.
American League Central Standings
Another division that draws intrigue in the American League baseball standings is the American League Central. This division was responsible for the winningest regular season team of all-time in the 2000s when the Chicago White Sox finished with a better performance in the standings than any team in history to that point.
Today, the White Sox battle it out in a competitive division that features other contenders such as the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians. All three of those AL Central teams have gone onto the playoffs in the recent history of the league, with Cleveland getting to multiple World Series.

Yankees’ Andrew Benintendi: Not Expected Back Before Playoffs
Benintendi said Thursday that he doesn’t expect to return from the injured list prior to the end of the regular season, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
Benintendi broke the hook of his hamate bone in early September and underwent surgery. He hasn’t experienced any setbacks in his recovery process, but he said Thursday that his mindset during his rehab has been to prepare for a potential postseason return. The 28-year-old isn’t sure when he’ll be able to resume swinging a bat, but he hopes that he’ll be in the mix to return during the playoffs. If the Yankees win the American League East, they’ll begin postseason play in the ALDS on Oct. 11.
Braves’ Max Fried: Allows One Run But Takes Loss
Fried was tagged with the loss against Philadelphia on Thursday despite allowing only one run on five hits and one walk while striking out eight batters over five innings.
Fried allowed only six baserunners across his five frames, but Phillies batters consistently worked deep into counts and collectively fouled off 20 balls, forcing the left-hander to rack up 107 pitches. As such, Fried was unable to hang around long enough to log his third straight quality start, though he did tally eight strikeouts — his most since late July. The veteran hurler has surrendered only five runs over 22 innings in four September starts, lowering his season ERA to a tidy 2.50.

Yankees’ Jameson Taillon: Eight Strikeouts Against Rival
Taillon did not factor into the decision Thursday, not allowing a run on four hits and a walk over six innings in a 5-4 victory over Boston. He struck out eight.
Taillon allowed two doubles, one from Tommy Pham and the other off the bat of Yu Chang. The righty has allowed one homer or more in eight of his last 10 starts with a 4.25 ERA during that span. Despite Yankee Stadium’s short porch, the 30-year-old has had more success at home, recording a 3.47 ERA over 90.2 innings as opposed to a 4.42 ERA over 73.1 innings on the road.

Mets’ Pete Alonso: Three
Alonso went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Tuesday’s 7-5 victory over the Brewers.
Alonso took Brad Boxberger deep for a three-run shot in the top of the sixth frame, narrowing the Brewers’ lead to 4-3. The long ball was his 37th of the year and sixth of September over 19 games. Alonso has driven in at least one run in eight consecutive games and has now set a career high with 121 RBI in 2022. The first baseman is batting .267 with 37 homers, 121 RBI, 84 runs and five stolen bases over 149 games in his fourth season with the Mets.

As the 2022 MLB season is coming to a close, the postseason picture is beginning to take focus.

Mets’ Brandon Nimmo: Mri Comes Back Clean
Nimmo underwent an MRI on Thursday that came back clean.
Nimmo was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Brewers in the bottom of the first inning due to left quadriceps tightness, but he doesn’t appear to be dealing with a particularly serious injury. He’s considered day-to-day heading into Friday’s series opener against the Athletics.
Yankees’ Wandy Peralta: Headed To Injured List
Peralta will be placed on the injured list with thoracic spine tightness Thursday, retroactive to Sept. 19, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Peralta struggled Sunday against the Brewers, giving up two runs on three hits while failing to record an out. The move is backdated to Monday, and the Yankees hope that the left-hander will be available for the team’s final series of the regular season since his injury isn’t considered particularly serious, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Braves’ Jay Jackson: Outrighted To Triple
Jackson was outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday.
He will remain in Atlanta’s organization after getting designated for assignment last week. Jackson has logged 1.1 scoreless innings over two MLB appearances this year and has a 1.53 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 17.2 innings at Triple-A.

Yankees’ Aaron Hicks: Rejoins Lineup Friday
Hicks is starting in left field and batting ninth Friday against the Red Sox.
Hicks has been feeling under the weather and hasn’t seen the field since Sept. 18, but he’s back in the lineup for Friday’s contest. The veteran outfielder has a .588 OPS in September, though he’s gone 5-for-12 with a home runs, a double and three runs in his last three games.
Braves’ Charlie Morton: Pitches Into Sixth
Morton got the win after he pitched 5.1 innings, surrendering one run on three hits and three walks while striking out nine Tuesday versus the Nationals.
Morton returned to form Tuesday, pitching into the sixth inning while striking out at least nine batters for the first time in five starts. The only blemish on his line came in the top of the sixth inning when a run came around to score after he had exited the contest. Morton has had an up-and-down September so far, producing a 3.97 ERA and 1.15 WHIP with 28 strikeouts over 22.2 innings in four starts. The right-hander tentatively lines up to pitch again Sunday on the road versus the Phillies.

Braves’ Travis D’arnaud: Two
D’Arnaud went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Nationals.
D’Arnaud took Erasmo Ramirez deep in the bottom of the fourth frame, driving in teammate Matt Olson in the process. The long ball was the catcher’s 18th of the season and fourth in September. Since the beginning of the month, d’Arnaud has batted .333 with four homers, seven RBI and 10 runs scored over 12 games.
How Many Wild Card Teams Are There In Mlb
There are six wild card teams in the MLB playoffs. Under the new MLB collective-bargaining agreement, the postseason was expanded, starting in 2022. There are three wild card teams in the NL and three teams in the AL. Each wild card team with the lowest seed faces the division winner with the lowest record. The format looks like this:
- No. 6 wild card team vs No. 3 division winner
- No. 5 wild card team vs No. 4 wild card team
Each AL and NL Wild Card series is a best-of-three set. The No. 1 seed, the team with the best record in each league, hosts the winner of the 4 vs. 5 matchups. Meanwhile, the No. 2 seed faces the winner of the No. 3 vs No. 6 in the Divisional Round.

Mets’ Francisco Lindor: Grand Slam In Win
Lindor went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, two runs and a walk in Tuesday’s 7-5 win over the Brewers.
Lindor singled and scored in the sixth inning before launching a grand slam off Taylor Rogers in the following frame. The shortstop has now gone deep 25 times this year and four times in his last 11 games. Since Sept. 6, Lindor has secured at least one hit in 13 out of his last 15 games, batting .317 with four homers, 13 RBI, 11 runs and a stolen base over that stretch.
Mets’ Edwin Diaz: Snags Four
Diaz got the save Tuesday versus the Brewers after he pitched 1.1 perfect innings while striking out three batters.
Diaz entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, tasked with protecting a 7-5 lead with a runner on first. The right-hander made quick work of Rowdy Tellez, striking him out to end the frame before he set the Brewers down in order in the ninth, registering two more punchouts in the final inning. Diaz is now up to 31 saves on the campaign and has converted his last 21 save opportunities. Since the All-Star break, the closer has produced a 0.87 ERA and 0.68 WHIP with 35 strikeouts over 20.2 innings in 19 appearances while going 11-for-11 in save chances.

Braves’ Bryce Elder: Impresses In Spot Start
Elder allowed one earned run on four hits and two walks while striking out six across 5.2 innings Wednesday against the Nationals. He did not factor into the decision.
Elder got a spot start after Spencer Strider had his start pushed back a few days. Elder took advantage of the look at the big-league level, inducing nine groundball outs to go along with his six punchouts to keep the Nationals lineup in check. Though he’s pitched at Triple-A Gwinnett for much of the season, Elder has maintained a 3.38 ERA with a 36:21 K:BB across 40 innings with Atlanta on the campaign.
