Ole Miss and Southern Miss baseball are ready to face off in a best-of-three series for the NCAA Tournament Hattiesburg Super Regional.

The series starts at 3 p.m. CT on Saturday, June 11.

Ole Miss is 35-22 overall after winning three straight in the Coral Gables Regional.

Southern Miss is 47-17 overall. It played five games as the host of the Hattiesburg Regional after losing to LSU in the second game. The Golden Eagles beat LSU in back-to-back games to close out the regional.

Ole Miss Beats Usm To Win Hattiesburg Super Regional Earn College World Series Berth

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For a second consecutive baseball game, University of Mississippi pitchers simply overwhelmed University of Southern Mississippi hitters.

And just like that, Ole Miss had pocketed two, one-sided victories to sweep homestanding USM out of the Hattiesburg Super Regional and reserve a spot in the College World Series.

The Rebels blanked the Golden Eagles for a second, consecutive day, taking a 5-0 win on a scorching-hot Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

It marked the third consecutive time the Rebels had defeated USM on their home turf this year, and the last two wins cinched Ole Miss first trip to Omaha, Neb., since 2014.

The Golden Eagles saw their 2022 baseball season come to an end

Ole Miss pitching was the story in the Rebels three-game sweep to the title of the Coral Gables Regional last weekend, and the past two days in Hattiesburg proved no different.

Ole Miss starting pitcher Hunter Elliot allowed a first-inning infield single to Will McGills, but that was the only baserunner he allowed in seven shutout innings. The left-hander did not walk a batter and struck out 10.

Elliot was lifted in the top of the eighth inning when USM sandwiched two singles around a fielders choice.

Reliever Josh Mallitz replaced Elliott and got a strikeout before issuing a walk to load the bases. But Mallitz got out of the inning on a popup, ending USMs best and only threat of the game.

The back-to-back shutouts were the first for the Golden Eagles since 2011.

Usm Never Gets The Momentum Swing It Needs

Southern Miss coach Scott Berry spoke at length after Saturday’s game about his team’s inability to turn the momentum in its favor in a 10-0 loss.

Their bats ice cold, the Golden Eagles suffered from a similar problem Sunday.

A few big strikeouts from Hall early in the game gave the Golden Eagles some juice, but Southern Miss got nothing from its offense.

After the Golden Eagles were held scoreless on Saturday, Berry juggled the lineup, dropping Reece Ewing from the third to ninth in the order and moving Danny Lynch from sixth to fill Ewing’s vacated spot.

It didn’t take.

The Golden Eagles registered only three hits and were held scoreless.

With Elliott finally chased from the game, Southern Miss had one of only two opportunities with runners on base all game in the eighth.

Carson Paetow came up as the tying run with two outs and the bases loaded, but popped out to shallow center field to end USM’s best scoring opportunity.

This Will Not Be The First Time Ole Miss And Southern Mississippi Have Met With High Postseason Stakes On The Line

Just last season the pair met in the Oxford Regional and the Golden Eagles took Ole Miss to the brink before the Rebels won the winner-take-all Game 7 of the regional to advance to the Super Regionals.

After not meeting in the regular season in 2021 Ole Miss and Southern Miss resumed the two regular meetings at Pearl and Hattiesburg this year. The two game series was split with the Golden Eagles winning in comeback fashion at Trustmark Park in Pearl before the Rebels evened things up a month later.

Both of those games were midweek contests, meaning neither team faced the others top pitching. Ole Miss did not see Tanner Hall and Southern Miss did not encounter Dylan DeLucia or Hunter Elliott.

Its tough. We dont see the pitching staff or at least the starters, Bianco said. You see some of the relievers. The scouting report for the hitters wont be as far for us. But with all the video thats available to us now, it doesnt really matter who youre playing.

The Ole Miss Rebels baseball team represents the University of Mississippi in NCAA Division Icollege baseball. The team participates in the West Division of the Southeastern Conference . An Ole Miss team that was struggling to qualify for the SEC Tournament in late April slides into the Super Regionals against a non-Power Five program from its own state.

The Rebels made quick work of a Coral Gables Regional that was delayed by weather. Ole Miss beat Arizona twice, but the winners bracket game against Miami is more telling of how far the Rebels can go.

Ole Miss generated four walks and rung up one of the nations best pitchers in Carson Palmquist to 93 pitches before his exit in the sixth inning.

From there, Ole Miss put two runs up on reliever Alex McFarlane, good enough to cover a masterful performance from Hunter Elliott and his eight strikeouts. The Ole Miss bats are led by the hottest hitter in the nation in Tim Elko.

Southern Mississippi will look to continue its path for its second trip to Omaha in program history.

The Golden Eagles have arguably the best starting staff in the nation in Hurston Waldrep, Tanner Hall and Hunter Riggins. None of those pitchers own an ERA over 3.00, with Riggins having the highest FIP of the trio at 3.25.

This is the second ranked staff in ERA and the top team nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Big Inning Burns Tanner Hall Golden Eagles

The Rebels scored in only six different innings in the Hattiesburg Regional, but finished the two-game series with 15 runs.

Ole Miss needed only one big inning to be comfortable Sunday, scoring three times in the fifth to blemish what was an otherwise solid outing for the Southern Miss ace.

Jacob Gonzalez’s run-scoring single gave the Rebels the lead, then Justin Bench scored on a passed ball by catcher Blake Johnson.

A Kevin Graham RBI single followed, putting Southern Miss in a 3-0 hole from which it never climbed out.

Hall, a victim of a handful of softly struck base hits, pitched 5 innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking one.

The Rebels also scored twice against the Southern Miss bullpen, using an RBI single by Bench and TJ McCants’ solo home run.

Ole Miss Southern Miss Could Meet In Super Regional Play

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ole Miss and Southern Miss could meet in postseason play if they both win their respective regionals.

Ole Miss is the No. 3 seed in the Coral Gables Regional in Florida Miami is the host. The Rebels first play No. 2 seed Arizona on Friday, June 3 at 6 p.m. CT. Canisius is the No. 4 seed.

Southern Miss is the No. 11 overall seed and will host LSU, Kennesaw State and Army.

If Ole Miss and Southern Miss win their respective regionals, then Southern Miss would host the Rebels in the Hattiesburg Super Regional.

Now Ole Miss And Southern Miss Are Meeting Up On The Weekend In One Of The Biggest College Baseball Series In Mississippi In Recent Memory

This also ensures for a second straight season a team from Mississippi will be one of the eight teams in the College World Series field in 10 days.

When the two teams met on a Wednesday night last month there were over 6,300 people in attendance at Pete Taylor Park. The listed capacity is 4,300. Most of those were Southern Miss fans, but it is safe to assume that attendance number on May 11 is going to be shattered come this weekend.

Obviously they have a great fan base and I think we broke the attendance record last time we were there about a month ago, Bianco said. We dont have a lot of our fans show up on night but Im thinking a lot will show up this weekend when we get there.

HATTIESBURG Southern Miss baseball faces its fourth elimination game of the postseason as it hosts Ole Miss on Sunday .

The Golden Eagles failed to score in the first game of the Hattiesburg Super Regional against the Rebels , falling 10-0 at Pete Taylor Park.

Southern Miss registered only four hits, staying in the game until the top of the sixth, when the Rebels broke off a seven-run inning, chasing starter Hurston Waldrep and two relievers before USM settled on Drew Boyd.

The Golden Eagles will give the ball to their ace, Tanner Hall, as they look to win a fourth consecutive win-or-go-home contest.

Hall owns a 9-2 record on the season with a 2.60 earned run average.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Ole Miss picked up a win in game one of the Hattiesburg Super Regional on Saturday, and it now sits one win away from reaching the College World Series.

For a moment in the fifth inning, it appeared that Southern Miss hit a grand slam to take the lead over the visiting Rebels, but that joy from the home crowd quickly turned as Ole Miss ran away to a 10-0 win in game one of the super regional.

What appeared to be a grand slam for the Golden Eagles in the fifth inning was narrowly a foul ball, and Ole Miss starting pitcher Dylan DeLucia escaped the bases-loaded situation with a strikeout on the next pitch, preserving a 3-0 lead for the Rebels. The following inning saw the Rebels put up seven runs, securing its 10-0 win in game one of the super regional.

DeLucia’s escape act in the fifth inning was part of a 5.2 inning performance where he allowed four hits and put up nine strikeouts. Jack Dougherty pitched in relief of DeLucia, striking out one over the course of 3.1 innings.

Over the course of the game, Southern Miss used five pitchers compared to the Rebels’ two. Tim Elko once again led Ole Miss in RBIs with three, and Kevin Graham was second on the team with two. In all, five Rebels drove home runs in the win, and Justin Bench was the only member of the starting nine to not record a hit.

PEARL, Miss. Fresh off its series win at Kentucky over the weekend, No. 9 Ole Miss baseball is scheduled to face in-state opponent Southern Miss at Trustmark Park on Tuesday night.

The Rebels and Golden Eagles will square off at the home of the Atlanta Braves AA-affiliate Mississippi Braves, and Ole Miss is looking to carry momentum into a home weekend series against Alabama.

Southern Miss jumped into the D1Baseball Top 25 this week as well, coming in at No. 18 in the country. After revamping its weekend pitching rotation against Kentucky, former Friday night starter Derek Diamond is expected to take the hill for Ole Miss in the midweek.

Hunter Elliott Baffles Southern Miss Bats

The criticism of the Southern Miss lineup throughout much of the season centered on missed opportunities.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles didn’t create very many opportunities.

Ole Miss freshman Hunter Elliott plowed through the USM order with alarming ease.

Southern Miss struggled to contend with a breaking ball that Elliott used in just about any count.

He often got ahead with his offspeed pitches, then surprised the Golden Eagles with fastballs in breaking ball counts.

Elliott finished with 7 scoreless innings, allowing only three baserunners and striking out 10 batters.

Ole Miss takes on Southern Miss in Hattiesburg for a spot in the College World Series.

The Rebels pounded Arizona 22-6 on June 6 to finish their region with a perfect 3-0 mark. Southern Miss beat LSU two out of three times to win the Hattiesburg Regional on June 3-6. It marks the latest trip for the Eagles, a team thats become a Super Regional regular.

We feel that we have established that tradition in baseball, that consistency that young men are looking for when theyre looking at a program that wins and develops players, Souther Miss head coach Scott Berry said via the Clarion Ledger. Certainly, being those in-state guys, theyre attracted to that because theyre more familiar with it.

If you wouldve asked us two weeks ago who we wanted to play, I dont think it wouldve mattered, Ole MIss second baseman Peyton Chatagnier said via the Clarion Ledger. Its really cool that we get to play Southern Miss. I think its going to be great. But at the end of the day, its just another team that we have to beat and keep moving forward.

Southern Miss Prepares For Ole Miss In Hattiesburg Super Regional

Southern Miss baseball is getting game-day ready for Super Regionals happening at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg.

Game one starts at 3 p.m. Saturday and you can expect a packed house, which is exactly what the Eagles want.

Sports Director Jeff Haeger is in Hattiesburg now catching up with USM players and the excitement surrounding the Super Regional games.

They know the Rebels are going to come out swinging, but also that the fan base of Southern Miss will be out in full force cheering them on. Pitcher Tanner Hall said, We want to go right at em and make it a war. I would think the best team wins, thats just how it normally goes. Were going to fight and I know they are too, and they arent going to make it easy on us. Thats baseball and were excited for it.

Pitcher Hurston Waldrep said, It does a lot. We saw it last weekend playing LSU, playing Army, Kennesaw in the regional. We saw the advantage we felt like it gave us. We were comfortable with them. It gave us confidence to go out there. They trusted in us. They were with us the whole time. Every inning we played, every pitch we threw, they were there for us. We just felt like we could compete harder and play better in front of them.

Game time for the first Super Regional matchup between the Rebels and the Eagles is 3 p.m. Saturday.
