Phillies’ Bryce Harper: Elbow Surgery On Tap

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said Wednesday that Harper is scheduled to undergo elbow surgery Nov. 23 in Los Angeles, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Dombrowski said he’s still unsure whether Harper will require Tommy John surgery or another type of procedure to repair the torn UCL in his right elbow, as a determination on that front won’t be known until Harper’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, has a chance to evaluate the injury and provide a recommendation. Regardless of what kind of surgery Harper requires, Dombrowski said he doesn’t expect it to “slow him down” whenever the 30-year-old is deemed ready to make his 2023 debut. Even if that’s the case, Harper could still be limited strictly to designated-hitter duties to begin the upcoming season, and a potential Tommy John surgery would likely prevent the 30-year-old from playing the outfield until 2024. A more precise timeline for Harper’s return to baseball activities won’t be known until the surgery is completed next week.

Chicago White Sox 22 Boston Red Sox 13

The White Sox and Red Sox battled for colored-sock supremacy in high-octane encounters throughout the 1970 season. Closing out their first series, the White Sox avoided a sweep by touching home plate 22 times.

Boston answered with a quaint 13 runs, commenced by a first-inning homer from star first baseman Carl Yastrzemski. By then, however, Chicago had already jumped to a 6-0 lead in a hot start fueled by two Red Sox errors.

Outfielder Walt Williams and shortstop Luis Aparicio orchestrated Chicago’s offensive bonanza by each lacing five hits atop the batting order. Third baseman Bill Melton authored the team’s lone long ball, a solo shot to start the third.

On Aug. 29, Chicago once again stood triumphant in an offensive-laden victory, 13-9, over Boston. The Red Sox gained payback the following day, starting a doubleheader sweep with a 21-11 win over their budding rival.

How Do You Hit A Homerun In Baseball

To hit a homerun, a batter must score off of their own hit. Usually, this will be done by the batter hitting the ball straight over the outfield fence. The ball must be hit between the two foul poles or else it will be ruled foul and count as a strike . However, a fly ball that hits one of the foul poles is also considered a home run. Another way to hit a homerun is through an inside-the-park home run. This takes place when a ball is hit onto the field of play, and the hitter is able to reach every base safely. However, it is not considered a home run if a fielder makes an error. For instance, if a hitter were to hit a double, but a defender threw the ball away and subsequently the hitter scored, the hitter would only be credited with a double.

How To Keep Score In A Baseball Game

If you have intentions of being involved in baseball for many years, it’s important to learn how to keep score in baseball.

This method is used across the board so that anyone can understand what happened on every play in the game, no matter whether they attended the game or even watched the game at all.

Unlike some other sports, though, keeping score in baseball can seem like a daunting task. That’s because not only is every play in a game tracked, but so, too, is every pitch.

Once you learn how to keep score in baseball, though, doing so is a breeze and is actually quite fun.

Let’s take a look at all the aspects of keeping score in a baseball game.

Record Plays During The Game

You use the diamonds in the score sheet for two purposes: to record the result of each at bat and to record the progress of each player around the base paths. Even after a player finishes an at bat, you can revisit the diamond chart to record putouts, stolen bases, advances on balks, advances on balls in play, and other events.

Table 1-1. Common scorekeeping abbreviations

Fly ball

A standard system is used for referring to defensive positions. Figure 1-2 illustrates the name and number associated with each position .

Figure 1-2. Defensive-position codes

These symbols are used to describe fielding. For example, suppose the shortstop fields a ball and throws it to the second baseman to get one out, and the second baseman throws it to the first baseman to get a second out. This is known as a 6-4-3 double play. If the third baseman commits an error, this is noted as E5.

After each at bat, you should record the base reached by that player and note how the player reached the base. Figures 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 1-7 through 1-8 show common notations for recording plays . Notice that the base paths are darkened to show where a player has run.

Figure 1-3. Single

Figure 1-7. Walk

Figure 1-8. Strikeout

Optionally, you can include more information about each hit. For example, you can draw a line showing where the ball was hit, and you can include a notation showing whether it was a fly ball, line drive, or ground ball. See Figure 1-9 for an example of this.

Baseball Basics: How To Keep Score

How To – Score keeping baseball – BASIC

Different fans have different methods of keeping a scorecard, and many use their own notations. But here’s a simple method:

If the hitter grounds out to shortstop, for example, write in “6-3,” which shows the shortstop threw him out at first base. If the hitter flies out to left field, write a “7.”

If the batter gets a hit, write in the hit according to which base he reached. Each corner of the box represents a base, with the lower-right corner being first.

If he singles, put a “-” in the lower right. If he doubles, write a “=” in the upper right, and so on. For a walk, use “BB” in the lower right. As the runner advances, mark the appropriate symbol in the appropriate corner.

If a runner scores, put a circle at the bottom of the box, and inside the circle put the symbol of the play and/or the player that drove him in. For example, if the No. 5 hitter drives in two runs with a single, mark his single in the bottom right of his box and mark a circle with the number “5” in it in the boxes of the runners who score.

At the end of each inning, total the hits and runs for that inning only. At the end of the game you’ll be able to add the innings total to get the game score.

Philadelphia Athletics 18 Cleveland Indians 17

Jimmie Foxx, pictured with brother Sam, led the Philadelphia Athletics to a 18-17 victory with three homers.Anonymous/Associated Press

When researching MLB’s highest-scoring affairs, the Philadelphia Athletics popped up more than anyone else. And they almost always finished on the losing end:

  • 1901: Boston Americans 23, Philadelphia Athletics 12
  • 1932: New York Yankees 20, Philadelphia Athletics 13
  • 1936: Chicago White Sox 21, Philadelphia Athletics 14

Since this list features two more Athletics shortcomings, let’s take a look at a triumph.

Some readers may say this game doesn’t count, as the Athletics and Indians needed 18 innings to produce 35 total runs. Yet they entered extras at 15 apiece before both lineups stuttered.

Superstar first baseman Jimmie Foxx went 6-for-9 with three dingers, the last of which he crushed in the 16th frame. Cleveland, however, canceled out the two-run blast with a pair of scores.

Even the pitchers joined the fun. Eddie Rommel, who threw a now-unthinkable 17 innings in relief of Philly starter Lew Krausse, went 3-for-7 with a walk. Cleveland starter Clint Brown collected two hits but allowed 13.

Although 17 runs is a typically admirable output, the Indians left a staggering 24 runners on base. Shortstop Johnny Burnett’s MLB-record nine hits went to waste in the gutting 18-17 loss.

What Are The Basic Rules Of Baseball

Baseball is a sport where two teams compete to score the most runs. Each game is nine innings, and each individual inning has two halves. In the top half, one team hits and the other team defends, and in the bottom half the teams switch roles. The game is played via at-bats, essentially a one-on-one battle between the pitcher and batter. If the pitcher and his defense are able to get three outs, the inning ends. If a batter acquires three strikes, they get a strikeout. On the other hand, if they get four balls they get walked and receive a free trip to first base. When batters hit, they must hit the ball into the field of play which encompasses every part of the field between the foul lines.

It’s hardly a surprise to see Coors Field host a pair of baseball’s most memorable slugfests. Nine years ago, the Colorado Rockies won the first of two highlighted bouts in their hitter’s paradise.

The Rockies and Florida Marlins celebrated the Fourth of July with plenty of fireworks, combining for 43 hits and 35 runs. Mike Jacobs reached base six times for Florida while Colorado’s first four batters went a combined 16-for-22 with five homers and 13 runs.

That includes leadoff hitter Ryan Spilborghs and franchise cornerstone Matt Holliday, who exploited the venue’s high altitude with two homers apiece. Yet the Rockies still entered the final inning trailing 17-16 before rallying with four singles, the last of which from Chris Iannetta sealed the walk-off win.

Report: Correa Joins Mets On 12

" Ask Jim" ...: 04/01/2006

Carlos Correa struck a 12-year, $315-million agreement with the New York Mets, spurning the San Francisco Giants hours after his introductory press conference was nixed, sources told Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The star shortstop previously agreed to a 13-year, $350-million deal with the Giants. The team was scheduled to unveil him Tuesday, but a concern arose regarding his physical, postponing proceedings.

A pre-MLB injury appears to have been the issue discovered during Correa’s physical examination, reports the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser.

“While we are prohibited from disclosing confidential medical information, as Scott Boras stated publicly, there was a difference of opinion over the results of Carlos’ physical examination. We wish Carlos the best,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in a statement, according to NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic.

Boras, Correa’s agent, said the Giants indicated an interest in continuing negotiations after canceling Tuesday’s press conference but didn’t contact him afterward.

Correas camp and the Giants had a difference of opinion on the medical, and agent Scott Boras worked out a deal with Steve Cohen. We needed one more thing. And this was it, Cohen said.

Jon Heyman

“This really makes a big difference,” Mets owner Steve Cohen said of the Correa acquisition. “I felt like our pitching was in good shape. We needed one more hitter. This puts us over the top.”

How Do You Score In Baseball

Scoring in baseball can only be done in the hitting teamâs half of the inning. The first step to scoring is getting on base. This can be done through getting a hit, the defense committing an error, a batter being walked, or the batter being hit by a pitch. Once a player reaches base safely, they can advance by stealing a base or via a teammate moving them over. Once a player reaches all three bases and crosses home plate safely, they score a run. A player scores immediately with a homerun.

Phillies’ Johan Rojas: Contract Selected By Phillies

Rojas’ contract was selected by the Phillies on Tuesday.

The move means Rojas can’t be selected in the Rule 5 draft. The speedy outfielder may have a big-league future, and his wheels will give him added fantasy value if and when he eventually arrives, but his bat doesn’t yet appear ready to push for a big-league spot. He struggled to a 68 wRC+ in 70 games for High-A Jersey Shore, though he at least improved to a respectable 100 wRC+ in 60 games for Double-A Reading. A strong start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley this year could earn him a big-league look, at which point the speed which helped him steal 62 bases last year could send fantasy players scrambling to pick him up.

How To Track Runners’ Progression

The final major thing you’ll record when learning how to keep score in baseball is how the runners progress around the base path.

In each box will be a diamond that will represent the diamond on the field.

As a runner advances from one base to the next, you will draw a line from the original base and to the end base.

For example, if a hitter gets walked, you will write BB in the box and also draw a line from home plate to first base.

As the runner progresses around the diamond, you will also record how he did so.

Sometimes, the runner will progress from one base to the next based on what a subsequent hitter does.

In this case, you will not need to make a special record of what caused him to advance.

For example, if a runner was on first but moved to second because of a single from the next batter, that will be signified by the 1B you’ll put in the next batter’s box.

Sometimes, though, the batter will advance from one base to the next based on something other than what the batter does.

These events you will record in the runner’s box between the lines you draw between the bases.

These events include:
