Tigers’ Matt Manning: Likely Out For Season

Recent tests showed Manning to be dealing with fatigue and tendinitis in his arm, Jason Beck of reports.

Manning’s injury this late in the season virtually guarantees he will not pitch again this year. The 24-year-old righty will finish the season with a 2-3 record alongside a 3.43 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 63 innings.

Tigers’ Eric Haase: Idle Thursday

Haase is out of the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Royals.

He’ll get a breather for the day game after he was behind the plate for all nine innings of the Tigers’ 2-1 win Wednesday night. Tucker Barnhart will get the starting nod at catcher, forming a battery with starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.

Tigers’ Will Vest: Starting Tuesday

Vest will start Wednesday’s game against the Royals, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Matt Manning was scheduled to start and went through his pregame routine Wednesday as usual, but Vest will instead take the mound first for Detroit. Vest hasn’t thrown more than two frames in any appearance this year, so he should give way to the bullpen after an inning or two.

Detroit Tigers Edge Kansas City Royals 2

First-pitch weather forecast: mid-50s, 10 mph wind gusts.

Probable starting pitchers: Tigers RHP Matt Manning vs. Royals LHP Daniel Lynch (4-11, 5.06 ERA.

8. Jeimer Candelario, 3B

9. Victor Reyes, LF

Game notes: The Tigers won in extras Tuesday thanks to two big hits from Harold Castro. Manning has seen the Royals twice this month, throwing a combined 10 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He took the loss last time out, ceding five runs vs. the Baltimore Orioles last Wednesday. Lynch pitched back-to-back games vs. Detroit to begin the month, and the Tigers scored 10 runs in a shade under nine innings during those starts.

The series ends with a 1:10 p.m. first pitch Thursday.

Tigers’ Gregory Soto: Records 29th Save

Soto pitched a clean ninth inning to earn the save in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Royals. He struck out one.

Soto cruised through the Royals on just 10 pitches to earn his 29th save of the season. After taking a loss back on Sept. 17, the lefty has rattled off four straight scoreless appearances, picking up a save in each of those games. Soto has established himself as a fairly reliable closer this year, and he should head into 2023 with the role locked up in Detroit.

Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera: Seeing Steady Playing Time

Cabrera will serve as the Tigers’ designated hitter and No. 4 batter in Wednesday’s game against the Royals.

Since returning Sept. 19 from a stint on the injured list, Cabrera looks to have moved into a near-everyday role after he had previously been playing on a more part-time basis prior to being shelved. He’s hit a modest 3-for-19 since being activated, but Cabrera will pick up his fifth start in six games nonetheless.

Tigers’ Harold Castro: Back On Bench

Mariners vs. Tigers Game Highlights (6/8/21) | MLB Highlights

Castro is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Royals.

The lefty-hitting Castro will take a seat against Royals southpaw Daniel Lynch after going 9-for-14 with a home run, a double and six RBI while starting each of the past three games at three different positions. He appears to have recaptured a near-everyday role against right-handed pitching.

Tigers’ Kerry Carpenter: Sitting Against Righty

Carpenter is out of the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Royals.

The lefty-hitting Carpenter finds himself on the bench for the second straight game, this time versus a right-hander after he took a seat Wednesday against Royals lefty Daniel Lynch. Willi Castro will pick up another start in right field at Carpenter’s expense.

Tigers’ Daniel Norris: Earns First 2022 Win

1989 Score Detroit Tigers Baseball Card #627 Steve Searcy for sale ...

Norris tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Wednesday against the Royals. He allowed one hit and struck out one.

Matt Manning was scratched right before his scheduled start due to arm fatigue and tendinitis, so the Tigers made it a bullpen game. That allowed Norris to swoop in for his first win of the season and just his third since the beginning of last year. The lefty now has a 5.53 ERA, and he’s not much of a fantasy factor in his current relief role.

Cabrera is out of the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Royals.

The 39-year-old will be getting some maintenance while Detroit concludes its series with a day game after a night game. Javier Baez will serve as the Tigers’ designated hitter while Cabrera rests after going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday’s 2-1 victory.

“I don’t think I stayed for a complete game that first year . But something happened. During the second year, I started watching more intently, listening to the broadcasters talk about strategy. I started getting it. Suddenly, a 162-game season didn’t seem ridiculously long anymore.” – Richard Ruelas in The Arizona Republic

Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera: Delivers Offense Wednesday

Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday’s 2-1 win over the Royals.

Cabrera took Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch deep in the first inning with a runner on, and it was all the offense Detroit needed in the narrow win. The veteran now has five long balls this season, which would be his fewest since hitting three home runs across just 38 games during an injury-plagued 2018 campaign.

Tigers’ Matt Manning: Not Starting As Scheduled

Manning didn’t start as expected Wednesday against the Royals, as Will Vest instead took the mound for the Tigers, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Manning was confirmed as Wednesday’s starter and went through his usual pregame work, but he didn’t take the mound for the opening frame. It’s unclear if the 24-year-old is dealing with some sort of injury, but Detroit should update his status in the near future.

Detroit Tigers Vs Arizona Diamondbacks

When: 9:40 p.m. Friday.

Where: Chase Field in Phoenix.

TV: Apple TV+ .

Radio: WXYT-FM .

First-pitch forecast: Partly cloudy, 100s .

Probable pitchers: Tigers LHP Rony García vs. Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly

9. Eric Haase, C

P. Rony García, RHP

Game notes: The Tigers three-city road trip continues with a three-game visit to Phoenix to face the NL Wests fourth-place team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs are seven games under .500, but that still has to be considered a victory, considering they lost 110 games last season, including 24 of 27 in June 2021.

This June hasnt been great for the Snakes, as theyre coming off a three-game sweep by the NL West-leading Padres in San Diego, with a 7-13 record this month. Still, they took two out of three from the AL Central-leading Twins, so dont sleep on Arizonas talent. The key matchup: Rony García vs. Arizonas Christian Walker. The 31-year-olds 19 home runs rank second in the NL, behind only the Mets Pete Alonso. Walker also has 18 doubles, third in the NL. Rookie center fielder Alek Thomas is having a solid start since his May 8 callup Arizonas 2018 second-round pick out of high school in Chicago is slashing .275/.338/.788, including six homers and seven doubles in 41 games.
