American Association And Early National League Eras

Cardinals vs. Blue Jays Game Highlights (7/27/22) | MLB Highlights

For the 1882 season, Chris von der Ahe purchased the team, reorganized it, and made it a founding member of the American Association , a league to rival the NL. 1882 is generally considered to be the first year of existence for the franchise which would later become known as the St. Louis Cardinals.

The next season, St. Louis shortened their name to the Browns. Soon thereafter they became the dominant team in the AA, as manager Charlie Comiskey guided St. Louis to four pennants in a row from 1885 to 1888.Pitcher and outfielderBob Caruthers led the league in ERA and wins in 1885 and finished in the top six in both in each of the following two seasons. He also led the AA in OBP and OPS in 1886 and finished fourth in batting average in 1886 and fifth in 1887 . Outfielder Tip O’Neill won the first batting triple crown in franchise history in 1887 and the only one in AA history. By winning the pennant, the Browns played the NL pennant winner in a predecessor of the World Series. The Browns twice met the Chicago White Stockings the predecessor to the Chicago Cubs tying one in a heated dispute and winning the other, thus spurring the vigorous St. Louis-Chicago rivalry that ensues to this day. During the franchise’s ten seasons in the AA, they compiled an all-time league-high of 780 wins and .639 winning percentage. They lost just 432 contests while tying 21 others.

Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan: Retreats To Bench

Donovan is out of the lineup for Monday’s game against the Nationals, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

The lefty-hitting Donovan will sit for the third time in five games, this time against a right-handed pitcher after his previous two absences came when the opposition brought southpaws to the mound. Donovan still appears to have the edge on a regular spot in the lineup at second base or designated hitter versus right-handed pitching, but he’ll give way to the hot-hitting Albert Pujols on Monday.

Cardinals’ Ljay Newsome: Activated From Triple

Triple-A Memphis reinstated Newsome from its 60-day injured list Monday.

Newsome, who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from the Tommy John surgery he required last summer, is ready to rejoin the Cardinals’ top affiliate after he recently wrapped up a six-appearance rehab assignment in the lower rungs of the minors. Between stops in the rookie-level Florida Complex League and with Single-A Palm Beach, Newsome struck out seven and allowed two runs on eight hits and one walk over 6.1 innings.

Quintana Wins In St Louis Debut Cardinals Sweep Dh Vs Cubs

timerupdate

ST. LOUIS Newly acquired José Quintana won in his debut with St. Louis, Tyler ONeill and Nolan Arenado homered and the Cardinals beat Chicago 7-2, completing a doubleheader sweep of the Cubs on Thursday night.

The Cardinals won the opener 4-3 as Lars Nootbaar hit a tying sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and a game-ending RBI single in the ninth.

Its tough to win two games, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. The guys came in, and they were determined to take both of those games one at a time, and they executed.

Quintana, traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates to St. Louis on Monday, surrendered one run, one hit and two walks and struck out seven batters in six innings in a no-decision debut with the Cardinals, who have won four straight and are tied for first place in the NL Central with Milwaukee.

You look into the eyes of the Quintanas of the world before that game starts and it will give you goosebumps how bad he wants it, Marmol said. You look at anybody on the club right now. Theres a really good feeling going around. The guys are determined. It would be a fun little run.

Jordan Hicks allowed a run on a hit and two walks, and Génesis Cabrera and Chris Stratton each tossed a scoreless inning in relief in the combined two-hitter.

Sean Newcomb allowed two runs on five hits in three innings serving as an opener in his first major league start since Aug. 10, 2020, at Philadelphia as a member of the Braves.

Ryan Helsley got three outs for the win.

Cardinals’ Dakota Hudson: Sent Packing To Minors

Amazon.com: 1990 Score Baseball #475 Dan Quisenberry St. Louis ...

The Cardinals optioned Hudson to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.

Hudson was moved to the bullpen over the weekend in anticipation of Jack Flaherty’s return from the 60-day injured list to start Monday’s series opener with the Nationals. With St. Louis now officially activating Flaherty, Hudson will end up losing his spot in the bullpen, as the Cardinals already had multiple pitchers capable of covering multiple innings in relief as necessary. Despite receiving the demotion, Hudson likely won’t have to wait long before getting another look with the big club. According to Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat, Hudson is scheduled to make his first start with Memphis on Tuesday and another on Sunday before he likely rejoins St. Louis when a sixth starter is needed for the team’s Sept. 17 doubleheader with the Reds.

Cardinals’ Jack Flaherty: Activated Ahead Of Start

The Cardinals reinstated Flaherty from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Monday against the Nationals, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

He’ll be making his fourth start of the season with the big club and his first since June 26 after being shut down for just over two months following a setback with his right shoulder. After building up to 6.2 innings over the course of five rehab starts between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis, Flaherty looks like he’ll be ready to handle a normal starter’s workload as he steps back into St. Louis’ rotation. Though Flaherty has been a major disappointment for those who invested in him on draft day, he still has a chance to salvage something this season and should be a strong fantasy option in nearly every league. He lines up for two starts this week against two sub-.500 teams, as he’s expected to make his next turn this weekend in Pittsburgh.

Cardinals’ Ryan Helsley: Nabs 13th Save

Helsley walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Cubs.

Helsley had logged three wins and a blown save over his five previous outings, with Giovanny Gallegos responsible for two saves since Helsley’s last successful closing assignment. The 28-year-old issued a one-out walk to Zach McKinstry but got Seiya Suzuki to ground into a double play to end the game. Helsley has permitted three runs in 12 innings since the start of August, accounting for half of the earned runs he’s given up all year. He has a 0.99 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 80:16 K:BB while converting 13 of 17 save chances through 54.1 innings.

Not that the Cardinals need much encouragement as they have taken command in the NL Central, but every bit helps. The Cardinals lost and the Brewers won on Monday, marking the first time since Aug. 13 that they lost a game in the standings to the Brewers, who are now 7½ games back.

The game was certainly not a straight line for Flaherty. The Nationals got a runner on in each of his five innings, including multiple runners in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

But Flaherty responded to those challenges. With a runner on second and one run in the third, he struck out the next three hitters. With runners on second and third and one out in the fourth, he got out of the inning without allowing a run. He did the same with runners on first and third and one out in the fifth. Had it not been for Tyler ONeills failed attempt at a diving catch on a fly ball by CJ Abrams in the third that went for a triple and ultimately a run, Flaherty could have gotten through his five innings without allowing a run.

Some good, some bad, Flaherty said. Made pitches when I needed to for the most part. When I was ahead, good things happened. When I was behind, they strung some hits together. Made a mistake 0-2 to Lane and what you do when you make a mistake 0-2. Other than that, I made pitches when I needed to.

As is Flaherty.

Cardinals’ Jack Flaherty: Takes Tough

Brewers vs. Cardinals Game Highlights (9/28/21) | MLB Highlights

Flaherty allowed one run on six hits and a walk over five innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against Washington.

Flaherty made his first MLB appearance since June 26 and looked solid. He fired 59 of 91 pitches for strikes, including 14 whiffs. Unfortunately for him, the Cardinals were shut out, resulting in a loss on his record. Flaherty has been limited to just 13 innings this season due to injuries but it looks like he’ll be healthy enough to make an impact down the stretch for both the Cardinals and fantasy managers. He’ll carry a 4.15 ERA into his projected start in Pittsburgh this weekend.

St Louis Cardinals Schedule

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a comprehensive team schedule for the 2021 St. Louis Cardinals with dates for every game played, opponents faced, a final score, and a cumulative record for the 2021 season.

“Although baseball decided to extend the regular season deeper into October to play 162 games , why not just play 154? Baseball has dealt with shortened seasons before. Selig spoke about the sanctity of playing 162 games, but baseball played 154 games until 1961. Baseball should have just let the games go and continued with the current schedule.” – Joe Morgan on ESPN

Cardinals’ Steven Matz: Nearing Rehab Assignment

Matz will throw a bullpen Sunday and then report to Double-A Springfield for a rehab assignment next week, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Matz continues to work his way back from an MCL strain in his left knee. He’s still not expected back until late September, which suggests the southpaw may spend more than one week in the minors working his way back to full health. Matz will pitch out of the St. Louis bullpen once he’s activated from the injured list.

Cardinals’ Junior Fernandez: Removed From 40

Yankees vs. Cardinals Game Highlights (8/7/22) | MLB Highlights

The Cardinals designated Fernandez for assignment Monday.

Fernandez will cede his spot on the 40-man roster to Jack Flaherty , who was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Monday versus the Nationals. Prior to being optioned to Triple-A Memphis on Aug. 2, Fernandez appeared in 13 games out of the St. Louis bullpen this season, logging a 2.93 ERA and 1.63 WHIP across 15.1 innings.
