#1 Tennessee vs #9 Vanderbilt Highlights (Game 1) | 2022 College Baseball Highlights

HOOVER, Ala. After beating Ole Miss in a late-night rain-delayed game Tuesday, Vanderbilt baseball is now set for a rematch with No. 1 Tennessee on Thursday in the SEC Tournament.

The game is scheduled to start 30 minutes after the Florida-Texas A& M game on SEC Network.

The top-seeded Vols earlier this season. Coach Tim Corbin and the Vanderbilt players downplayed the significance of the opponent, suggesting they would treat it like any other.

Blade Tidwell is expected to start for the Vols. The Commodores’ game notes list their projected starter as left-hander Devin Futrell .

Tennessee last played Saturday, completing the sweep of Mississippi State. Vanderbilt was swept by LSU before winning its opener.

This is the double-elimination portion of the bracket, in which teams are eliminated after losing twice. With three of the eight games originally scheduled for the first two days of the tournament postponed, it is unclear if there will be any alterations to the original schedule.

Runs Were Surprisingly Manufactured

Blake Burke hit a home run in the fifth, and Cortland Lawson hit one in the seventh. However, both were solo shots, so Tennessee baseball, after relying on power to score all year, actually manufactured lots of runs in this game. They still did it with extra base hits, as Jorel Ortega, Drew Gilbert and Evan Russell all drove in runs off doubles.

However, Seth Stephenson scored from first on Ortegas double. Luc Lipcius had a sacrifice fly to drive in Trey Lipscomb. Lipcius drove in Russell after a groundout to second in the eighth. Give credit to Tony Vitellos team, as they showed they have multiple ways to score.

No 5 Vanderbilt Baseball Vs No 1 Tennessee Vols: Live Score Updates

A year after Vanderbilt and Tennessee both made the College World Series, the two teams meet in one of the most highly anticipated regular-season series ever, with the Vols unanimously ranked No. 1 and the Commodores not far behind. Ticket prices for the matchup at Hawkins Field have spiked to hundreds of dollars on the secondary market, the hottest ticket in town.

Tennessee , on a 16-game winning streak, most recently swept Ole Miss in Oxford, then scored a midweek win over Western Carolina. Vanderbilt lost a series at South Carolina then defeated Lipscomb.

The Vols have not won the series in Nashville since 2009 when they swept the Commodores to end the regular season. Vanderbilt has won the last four series against Tennessee.

No 1 Tennessee Baseball Sweeps Series With Shutout Win Vs No 9 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE It was yet another dazzling pitching performance from Drew Beam that led No. 1 Tennessee to a 5-0 shutout victory and series sweep of No. 9 Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at Hawkins Field.

Beam continued his incredible freshman campaign by going the distance and throwing the first complete-game shutout by a UT pitcher since Garrett Stallings vs. Ole Miss on May 16, 2019.

The Murfreesboro, Tennessee, native, allowed just two hits, faced one batter over the minimum and did not allow a Vanderbilt player to advance past first base for the entire game. Beam retired the last 16 batters he faced in the contest.

The Vols’ bats were held in check in the early going by Commodores’ starter Patrick Reilly who allowed just one run and two hits in five innings but got going in the second half of the game to help Tennessee pull away late.

The Big Orange scored four runs over the final three innings after entering the seventh leading 1-0, courtesy of a Drew Gilbert solo home run in the fourth.

No 1 Tennessee Baseball Vs No 5 Vanderbilt: Live Score Updates

#8 Vanderbilt vs #1 Tennessee | SEC Tournament Second Round | 2022 College Baseball Highlights

Tennessee baseball is chasing its first sweep against Vanderbilt since 2009 on Saturday.

The No. 1 Vols and the No. 5 Commodores play Sunday in Nashville.

Tennessee won the series opener 6-2 on Friday. The Vols won 5-2 on Saturday.

Chase Dollander struck out six and allowed three hits in eight-plus innings to earn the win Saturday. Dollander allowed a pair of solo homers in the seventh inning. He faced the minimum through six innings. The lone hit he allowed in the first six innings was erased on a caught stealing.

Vols outfielder Jordan Beck was called out after a first inning home run Friday due to using an illegal bat. The umpire crew reviewed Beck’s bat following the home run and deemed it had not been approved for use in the contest.

“In pre-series bat testing, a sticker with the logo of the opposing team is placed on legal bats,” SEC associate commissioner for communications Herb Vincent said in a statement to Knox News. “There was a sticker on the bat in question, but it was not an appropriate sticker on the bat. It was a sticker from a midweek game. Therefore, the bat was deemed illegal.

Tennessee Baseball In It To Win It Vandy Baseball In Trouble Rexrode Mailbag

Got some Tennessee baseball questions for this mailbag, as expected, and theyll lead things off because Tony Vitellos outrageously good 53-7 team is the No. 1 overall seed and the clear favorite to win a national championship.

But I have a question back for the Tennessee fans: Are any of you not into this team? And by into I mean invested. Watching, listening, reading, following, perhaps planning to spend a decent amount of money this month to be there in person in Knoxville and/or Omaha, the only two places the Vols could possibly play. From what I can tell, Vitello and Drew Gilbert and Chase Dollander and Trey Lipscomb and Chase Burns and Mike Honcho and 105 mph Ben Joyce have Vols fans just about as riled up as Josh Heupel and Hendon Hooker and Byron Young and Cedric Tillman would if they were putting together a special season in Neyland Stadium. Im not saying interest in this or any UT baseball team matches what the interest would be in a UT football team with a chance to win it all. Not at all.

Is it win or bust for the BaseVols at this point? Can this season really be considered a success without a national championship? Brendan P.

Do you expect that theres a real risk that the Tennessee vs. Alabama annual game will end with the expansion? With THIS many teams in the conference once Texas and Oklahoma start playing in the SEC, just how many protected games can the programs expect to retain? Scott J.

Defensive Gap Made It A Blowout

Pitching was fine, and hitting did things differently. However, the Vols committed no errors on the night. Vanderbilt committed four. That broke this game open. UT had one unearned run, but more were after errors that had been committed in the game.

In the fourth, Seth Stephenson reached on an error, and he eventually made it home. Gilbert then advanced on a wild pitch in the eighth, which eventually got him to third and allowed him to reach home on a groundout. These players were a part of Tennessee baseballs dominating night.

Kentucky is the first team of the 2022 SEC baseball season to take a series from No. 1 Tennessee. The Wildcats took the first 2 games and will go for a sweep Saturday afternoon in Lexington.

Game 2 began Friday with a delayed start but had to be finished Saturday. It was 4-2 Kentucky in the top of the 8th inning when play resumed. The Cats added another run, picking up a 5-2 win to clinch the series.

The outcomes are surprising considering where the teams entered Thursday in the SEC standings. Tennessee led the conference with a 19-2 mark, while Kentuckys 7-14 SEC record was tied for last place with Missouri and Ole Miss.

As the low scores indicate, UK pitchers have managed to quiet the Volunteer bats:

Tennessee came to Lexington averaging 9.5 runs per game and leading the nation in HRs with 108 . UK pitching held Vols to 4 combined runs in first two games, no long balls.
