The Season Concludes On October 3 With 12 Divisional Games

Quick Navigation

The entire season schedule follows the MLB Players Associations refusal of a proposed agreement to move opening day to April 28 and reduce eight games from each teams schedule.

The suggestion emerged when officials from the Cactus League and Arizona municipalities asked the league to postpone spring training when 15 teams visit the area, owing to COVID-19 concerns. The players will report to spring training exercises the following week.

Last years MLB season was cut short because of the epidemic, which pushed Opening day back to July 23.

While there has been a modest decrease in new coronavirus infections and hospitalizations in the United States in recent days, both remain high. On Sunday, the number of unique daily COVID-19 cases fell below 100,000 for the first time since October. According to The COVID Tracking Project, almost 77,000 individuals are now hospitalized with the illness, and hundreds die every day.

According to the CDC, more contagious COVID-19 variants are spreading throughout the United States, with 932 cases first discovered in the United Kingdom identified across 34 states and nine cases of the strain first reported in South Africa confirmed across three states.

How Many Mlb Teams Are There

There are 30 MLB teams. The National League is home to the oldest teams, including the Atlanta Braves , Chicago Cubs , Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants.

The New York Yankees were founded in 1901, along with the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics. In 1998, the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks were formed, becoming the most recently expanded MLB teams.

Brewers at Cubs

The Cubs will kick off their season at Wrigley Field, but it should be a tough one against a divisional foe. The Brewers won the National League Central last season with a 95-67 record, while Chicago finished 20 games below .500 with a 71-91 record, placing them fourth.

Andrew McCutchen is the name to watch for Milwaukee. He signed a one-year deal worth $8.5 million this spring and should definitely bolster the Brewers lineup. McCutchen is a five-time All-Star, but his last nod came in 2015. He had 107 hits, 80 runs batted in and 27 home runs last season with the Philadelphia Phillies, which were all the most he has had since 2018.

For the Cubs, Seiya Suzuki will be making his MLB debut after signing a five-year deal reportedly worth $85 million. He had played for the Hiroshima Carp in Japan and tallied five All-Star nods and five Gold Gloves during his nine seasons there.

Mets at Nationals

The Mets, with the leagues second-highest payroll in MLB at over $252 million, enter the season as New Yorks big spenders. But they could be without their two highest-paid players on Opening Day.

Whoever does will face one of baseballs most prolific young hitters in Juan Soto, who hit .313 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs last season. Patrick Corbin gets the Opening Day start as the Nationals look to rebound from last seasons 65-97 finish.

Reds at Braves

Astros at Angels

Red Sox at Yankees

Sixteen Mlb Teams Open Their Seasons Friday After A Seven

Major League Baseball made its return Thursday, as 14 of the league’s 30 teams played their Opening Day games. The Cubs, Royals, Cardinals, Reds, Mets, Astros and D-Backs got off to winning ways to start the season, and you can find takeaways from Thursday’s action here. MLB‘s other 16 teams are set to get started on Friday, with Yankees-Red Sox, Phillies-A’s, Rockies-Dodgers and Blue Jays-Rangers among the matchups on Friday’s Opening Day schedule.

Friday’s schedule will have more of a traditional Opening Day feel, with 26 teams in action.

For the first time ever in 2022, there will be a 12-team playoff field, the largest postseason field ever in a full season. In theory, at least, that should mean more teams than ever realistically have a chance at winning the pennant heading into Opening Day.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the 2022 Opening Day schedule.

Blame And Business Impact

MLB brass is getting the lion’s share of the blame for the labor stoppage. A study released by research firm Morning Consult said 45% of fans blame MLB owners for failure to reach a new agreement. That’s up from 33% who blamed owners for the dispute around the shortened 2020 season. Twenty one percent blame the players.

The lockout is already taking a toll on some markets. The Wall Street Journal projects over $1 billion in losses for the Arizona and Florida spring training territories. And most of the local revenue for MLB clubs is temporality paused due to the lockout.

Longtime sports marketing executive Tony Ponturo said conversations with corporate sponsors likely have started and MLB clubs “are not getting their money until the games are played.” However, Ponturo added clubs could attempt to offer extra ad inventory to partners instead of refunding money, which he projects isn’t as significant during the first month of the season.

“But as it starts to drag, and their image is downgraded because you get angry fans if it becomes a disaster as it did in 1994-95” companies could elect to walk away, said Ponturo, the former vice president of global sports and entertainment marketing at Anheuser-Busch.

Turner Sports chief revenue officer Jon Diament said Tuesday companies are still waiting to buy regular-season MLB ad inventory, but they aren’t spending their baseball ad budgets on other programing just yet.

Players Are Set To Report To Spring Training This Weekend After An Agreement Was Reached Thursday

Major League Baseball is back. On Thursday, MLB and the MLB Players’ Association struck a new collective bargaining agreement that ends the owner-initiated locked out at 99 days. It is the second-longest work stoppage in baseball history behind the 1994-95 players’ strike .

A 162-game season will be played in 2022, though it will begin a week later than usual. The games that are missed will be made up later in the season as part of doubleheaders, off-days, etc. Here’s a look at MLB‘s new post-lockout calendar:

Transactions freeze lifted. The owners have a 6 p.m. ET call scheduled to ratify the new CBA on Thursday, according to SNY’s Andy Martino. The call is a formality, the owners will approve it, and once that happens the lockout will officially end and the transactions freeze will be lifted. At that point, trades and free agent signings and all that other good stuff can resume.

Players can begin reporting to spring training as soon as Friday. Many players live in the area or have been working out near their team’s spring training complex in anticipation of an agreement, so they can report right away. Others are working out at separate facilities and could be a few days behind.

This is the mandatory reporting day for spring training, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. Players can begin reporting to camp Friday but they have to be there by Sunday.

Mlb Schedule : How Many Games Will They Play

Tigers vs. Royals Game Highlights (4/14/22) | MLB Highlights

As implemented by Rob Manfred, the 2020 MLB season will be 60 games long, barring any kind of stoppage for any reason. Full details of the schedule are unknown at this time, but MLB offered some information on June 23.

“The proposed schedule will largely feature divisional play, with the remaining portion of each Clubs games against their opposite leagues corresponding geographical division , in order to mitigate travel,” MLB said in a press release. Media reports said teams will play 40 intradivision games and 20 interleague games.

That would seem to eliminate the idea of having just three divisions instead of six this year.

Who Are The Best Free Agents

There is an unprecedented number of top-tier free agents still available to be signed by any MLB team. Among them:

  • 1B Freddie Freeman
  • SP Clayton Kershaw
  • DH Nelson Cruz

Freeman may be the first domino to fall because of his importance to the World Series champion Atlanta Braves. Does he leave the only home he’s known as a major leaguer for greener pastures? What could be better than returning to a defending championship team?

When Does Mlb Season End

The last game of the 2022 MLB regular season will be played on Sunday, Oct. 2. With the expansion of the playoffs, MLB eliminated the tie-breaking 163rd game that teams typically played on Monday. The postseason will begin on Oct. 4, with the entire season concluding after the final out of the World Series.

How Many Teams Make The Mlb Playoffs

12 teams will make the MLB Playoffs after the latest collective bargaining agreement.

MLBs goal in increasing the number of teams is to increase competitive balance, perhaps giving more small and mid-market teams an opportunity to make the playoffs. Increased fan interest is in the leagues best interest.

When Is Spring Training

Report: Start, length of 2021 baseball season unknown as MLB, union ...

Even though competitive MLB baseball usually runs from early April to early November, the games start before those dates.

The MLB preseason, or Spring Training, precedes the regular season and commonly begins in mid-February and lasts until the last week of March or just a couple of days before Opening Day.

During Spring training, each team plays around 30 training games. Besides exhibition games, teams also use this period for a series of practices.

Spring Training offers a chance for new players to fight for roster spots and provide practice time for established players before the real thing starts.

No matter what league theyre in, MLB clubs play their practice games against teams who have their Spring Training in the same state.

One group of teams trains in Arizona and forms the Cactus League, while those stationed in Florida take part in the Grapefruit League.

What Are The New Mlb Rules For 2022

While the new agreement gives MLB the ability to enact new rules with 45 days notice, that provision doesn’t go into effect until the 2023 season. So no pitch clock, no ban on defensive shifts and no larger bases this year.

The biggest immediate change is the universal designated hitter, which will add a DH to National League lineups. As a result, pitchers other than Shohei Ohtani won’t ever set foot in the batter’s box, except in rare circumstances.

Is There Any Baseball Played During Fall Or Winter

Behind the scenes at FIRST EVER MLB Draft Combine!

As you can see, baseball pros play most of their games during spring or summer. However, this doesnt mean that baseball completely stops during colder months.

Some of you may be familiar with the term winter ball which refers to leagues, mostly for young players, that play their games in the fall or even spill into the winter.

The start of these leagues commonly coincides with the end of the minor-league season in early September and the games are usually played into early November.

For this reason, some call these leagues fall ball. The best-known among these leagues was probably the Arizona Winter League.

It was the league affiliated with the MLB and involved six teams, usually packed with players from different Major League organizations.

Leagues like this provide an opportunity for young players to show their parent team that theyre worthy of a roster spot.

Mlb Cancels More Games Pushing Opening Day To April 14

  • Major League Baseball on Wednesday said the league has canceled more games, pushing Opening Day to April 14.
  • “Because of the logistical realities of the calendar, another two series are being removed from the schedule,” MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a statement.
  • It’s been more than a week since the owners canceled the beginning of the regular season.

Major League Baseball on Wednesday said the league has canceled more games, pushing Opening Day to April 14 as negotiations between the owners and players union remain at a standstill.

“Because of the logistical realities of the calendar, another two series are being removed from the schedule,” MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said in a statement.

“I am saddened by this situation’s continued impact on our game and all those who are a part of it, especially our loyal fans,” he added.

The MLB Players Association issued their own statement, which said MLB’s decision to cancel additional games was “completely unnecessary” and players have “yet to hear back” following proposals.

It’s been more than a week since the owners canceled the beginning of the regular season. League representatives and MLB Players Association officials met this week in New York as they seek a new collective bargaining agreement. Issues that need to be resolved include MLB’s competitive balance tax and minimum salaries.
