Sec Baseball Season Review And Stock Watch

MLB Opening Day: Astros, Angels to begin 2022 season at Angel Stadium

The case was settled long ago that the SEC is the best baseball conference in the nation, but never has it been more clear than in 2022.

Four teams from the leagueMississippi, Arkansas, Texas A& M and Auburnmade it to the College World Series and that number balloons to six if you include Oklahoma and Texas, which are set to join in the next several years. Ole Miss lifted the trophy when it was all said and done, giving the SEC its third straight national championship and fourth in the last five tournaments.

All the SEC has done since the season ended is have 83 players drafted, 25 more than the ACC, which had the second most players drafted.

And if thats not enough evidence, just look at the flow of players this offseason. In our recent list of the top 50 committed transfers in college baseball so far, 29 of them were transferring to an SEC program. Some of those players have since been drafted and wont make it to campus, but it still sends a message about where top talents want to go when they transfer.

Its not just the perennial national title contenders that are playing that game, either, as the likes of Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky are included in that group bringing in big-time transfer talent.

With the question of the best conference in college baseball having long ago been settled, its perhaps now a better question to ponder just how far the league can stretch its dominance in the coming years.

Major League Baseball Cancels Start Of 2022 Mlb Season Postpones Opening Day

Major League Baseball is canceling the start of the 2022 MLB season and postponing Opening Day with the MLB lockout now stretching into March.

MLB imposed a lockout on Dec. 2, 2021 following the expiration of the collective-bargaining agreement. Both sides expressed optimism for a new CBA being signed before spring training began. However, negotiations didnt really pick up until January and MLB went 43 days without making a proposal after imposing the lockout. On Jan. 25, league officials first expressed a willingness to cancel games.

Following minuscule progress in negotiations throughout January, baseball entered February working with a countdown. Pitchers and catchers were originally scheduled to report for spring training by Feb. 16. However, early talks in February went poorly and many became increasingly fearful by Feb. 13 that the 2022 season would be delayed.

MLB delayed its spring training schedule on Feb. 18 and intermittent negotiations resulted in no real progress. Before MLB officials and the MLBPA met in Florida for a full week of in-person negotiations, the league imposed a Feb. 28 deadline for a new CBA to be reached or else Opening Day would be postponed.

I consider missing games as a disastrous outcome for the industry.

MLB has unveiled the revised Grapefruit League and Cactus League schedules. Spring training games in Florida and Arizona will begin March 17 and conclude April 6, with teams scheduled to play between 15 and 18 games. Given the wider separation of spring training sites in Florida, Grapefruit League teams are grouped into geographic pods to help ease travel times.

Bob Nightengale reports that 16 teams will play their Opening Day on April 7 while 14 will have theirs on April 8. The first game on the schedule in 2022 will be a Red Sox-Yankees clash at Yankee Stadium.

The owners have, officially, ended the lockout by a 30-0 vote, via MLB Network’s Jon Morosi. Free agency will open as soon as the lockout ends at 7 p.m. ET, per Evan Drellich of The Athletic.

MLB owners are expected to ratify the agreement on a 6 p.m. ET conference call, according to multiple reports. Free agency would begin immediately afterward.

What Changes Are Being Made To The Playoffs

Playoffs will be expanded from 10 to 12 teams, starting this fall. The American and National Leagues will each add an extra wild-card team to the postseason, giving the division winners with the two best overall records in their respective leagues a first-round bye.

Also, there won’t be any Game 163 tiebreakers. All ties will be broken by a predetermined formula.

Instead of the one-game wild-card playoff that was instituted in 2012, the opening round of the playoffs will now be best-of-three series — with the higher seed hosting all three games. The division winner with the worst record in each league will play the wild-card team with the worst record, while the remaining two wild-card teams will play each other.

The next postseason round, the divisional playoffs, will continue to be a best-of-five series with no reseeding . The league championship series and the World Series will remain best-of-seven.

How Many Mlb Teams Are There

There are 30 MLB teams. The National League is home to the oldest teams, including the Atlanta Braves , Chicago Cubs , Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and San Francisco Giants.

The New York Yankees were founded in 1901, along with the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Guardians, Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics. In 1998, the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks were formed, becoming the most recently expanded MLB teams.

This year’s Opening Day will still be different than what was expected. The first two series of the season that fans expected to see when schedules were initially released in 2021 have been scattered throughout the season after they were postponed by commissioner Rob Manfred as the lockout continued.

The regular season will start a week late, with opening day tentatively scheduled for April 7 and games to be made up in doubleheaders just before the playoffs. Spring training starts imminently ahead of a full 162-game season.

The agreement includes increased minimum salaries and a decision to introduce the designated hitter to the National League to make it a universal rule across both leagues.

When MLB formally lifts its freeze on transactions, trades and free agent signings can resume immediately.

Hiroshima Carp outfielder Seiya Suzuki, who is seeking a move to the majors via the posting system, and free agent pitcher Yusei Kikuchi are among Japanese players still without a home for 2022 and beyond.

    When Does Spring Training Start

Players can immediately begin making travel arrangements and reporting to camp as early as Friday with a mandatory reporting date of March 13. However, some players who live outside the United States still need to go through the process of securing travel visas and could be delayed.

Teams have already opened up their spring camps for minor leaguers, although members of the major league coaching staffs have not all been present.

Exhibition games will now begin with two games on March 17 and the rest of the teams opening on March .

Even with the compressed time frame, teams should still have enough time to set their rosters for the start of regular-season play.
